SOMM Recordings’ survey of Charles Villiers Stanford’s chamber music continues with his two String Quintets and Three Intermezzi arranged for cello and piano : a unique collaboration between members of the Dante and Endellion Quartets, together with pianist Benjamin Frith, sees first recordings of the String Quintet No. 2 in C minor and the arrangement of the Three Intermezzi.

Oud and trumpet are two of my favourite instruments. A piano trio with these instruments is unusual, but I wanted to explore the beautiful textures, tonalities and emotional resonances that this combination of instruments offers. And of course, Andreas Polyzogopoulos (trumpet) and Kyriakos Tapakis (oud) are fabulous musicians and a joy to work with.

On October 9th the multi-instrumentalist Jack Wyllie (Portico Quartet/Szun Waves) presents his new project Paradise Cinema. It was recorded in Dakar, Senegal in collaboration with mbalax percussionists Khadim Mbaye (saba drums) and Tons Sambe (tama drums).

Moloko‘s 1995 album Do You Like My Tight Sweater? will be reissued as a limited 2LP coloured vinyl pressing in August. The dance/electronica duo’s debut featured the singles ‘Dominoid’ and ‘Fun for Me’ with the latter sneaking into the UK top 40 when it was re-released in 1996.

Kurt Vile’s Speed, Sound, Lonely KV (ep) was recorded and mixed in sporadic sessions that spanned four years at The Butcher Shoppe studio in Nashville, TN. It includes five songs — covers of John Prine and “Cowboy” Jack Clement as well as two originals — and was recorded alongside a cast of local heavies like Bobby Wood, Dave Roe, Kenny Malone and Matt Sweeney (Chavez, Superwolf). Most importantly, it features what KV has called “Probably the single most special musical moment in my life” – a duet with the late John Prine on the songwriter’s well-loved tune, “How Lucky.”

Sound has the ability to heal. This is the primary tenet that has driven Karma Moffett for over 35 years. Pure tones, resonant harmonics, the sounds of the earth. At the dawn of the 80’s, as the burgeoning movement of privately-issued New Age was taking hold, Karma Moffett was a pioneer. Eschewing the use of synthesizers and other increasingly-available electronic technology, Karma crafted his meditative, introspective music using ancient instruments. Primarily utilizing Tibetan Bells, and Singing Bowls, Karma Moffett crafted sounds that led the listener on an inward journey.

Iglesia Atomica La Guerra del Fin del Mundo is heavy stoner rock with space rock ingrained into its DNA. The music is raw with heavy psych guitars, double bass drumming, dirty bass lines, synth and organ. Theme is about the world coming to an end but it is saved by a shamanic invocation of Pachamama to stop the infallible attack.
