Who is Ilana Charnelle? It might be sex, cigarettes, lingerie, gin and speakeasies – but it’s also pure class. Forget skinny jeans, autotune and iPhones. It’s time for vintage glamour and old fashioned romance from the golden age of entertainment. After channelling Judy Garland and David Bowie for ACMI, amassing over 200,000 views on YouTube, and headlining a plethora of underground Melbourne institutions including Burlesque Bar, Speakeasy HQ, and Red Bennies, Ilana Charnelle premieres A Class Act – her debut solo cabaret. Scored by a suite of enchanting original songs, and musical director savant dandy Ned Dixon, A Class Act is a heartbreaking, honest and ultimately empowering hour of cabaret.

Sultry and sweet vocal stylings and brilliant arrangements of classic jazz and pop tunes. "For many years, Janet Staley has warmed musical notes - and appreciative audiences - with her captivating voice and style. I'm thrilled that Janet has collaborated with my brother, Cincinnati jazz musician Pat Kelly, as her keyboardist and arranger on her legacy CD, 'Whisper to the Wind.' It's beautiful." –Mike Kelly, columnist, Omaha World-Herald

In the summer of 1991 Gerry Mulligan decided to revisit Miles Davis's Birth of the Cool recordings. He discussed it with Miles Davis himself who said he might be interested in participating but sadly Davis died a few months later. With Wallace Roney (the perfect sound-alike) in the trumpeter's place, baritonist Mulligan got the band's original pianist and tuba player (John Lewis and Bill Barber), used his own bassist (Dean Johnson) and drummer (Ron Vincent), and found able substitutes in altoist Phil Woods (unfortunately Lee Konitz was unavailable to play his old parts), trombonist Dave Bargeron and John Clark on French horn.

Madrid's Alacran was the brainchild of drummer and guitarist Fernando Arbex, who enlisted fellow Spaniards Oscar Lasprilla on keyboards and vocalist/bassist Ignacio Egaña. Their self-titled debut was their only album, and the opening track, "Sticky," was their only single. Recorded in 1969 and issued with no promotion on either side of the Atlantic, the album nonetheless captured the attention of the youth culture in their homeland and in parts of the rest of Europe…

As a trio, this edition of guitarist Grant Green's many ensembles has to rank with the best he had ever fronted. Recorded on April Fool's Day of 1961, the band and music are no joke, as bassist Ben Tucker and drummer Dave Bailey understand in the most innate sense how to support Green, lay back when needed, or strut their own stuff when called upon. Still emerging as an individualist, Green takes further steps ahead, without a pianist, saxophonist, or most importantly an organist.

This 1966 concert at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles features sets by Duke Ellington and Ella Fitzgerald, with the source evidently being a soundboard tape. His star soloists consistently shine, especially tenor saxophonist Paul Gonsalves in the flag-waver "Soul Call" and the ballad "In a Sentimental Mood" (the latter usually a feature for Johnny Hodges). Cootie Williams' brash trumpet is showcased in "Take the 'A' Train," while high-note specialist Cat Anderson squeals in his "Prowling Cat." The drums are a bit too prominent in the mix, the sound is a bit muddy in places, and the microphone does not always pick up the leader's spoken…

Member groups Poco, Eagles. Randy Meisner's "new" album from Rev-Ola is a fanatic's rarities-only collection of tunes recorded as either unreleased demos or finished demos for stuff from his other records of the late '70s, the '80s, and the early '90s. The liner notes by Joey Stec are nothing more than hero worship, the sonics on these things are substandard, and most of the material sounds very dated and unfinished. The press material claims that Spencer Davis, James Griffin of Bread, Nick St. Nicholas of Steppenwolf, Billy Swan, and Charlie Rich Jr. are all present here, and it's not necessarily to be doubted, but it would be nice to know where (as well as who some of the backing vocalists were, since they sound so very familiar).

James MacMillan travels to St Kilda to play the traditional music that was so nearly lost forever. It's an extraordinary story. Trevor Morrison was the last person alive who knew the traditional music of the tiny Scottish Island of St Kilda, the inhabitants of which were forced to evacuate the island in 1930, leaving it uninhabited. Morrison recorded the music at a care home in 2006, music that otherwise would have been lost forever. He had been taught the pieces by his piano teacher, who was originally from St Kilda. His teacher would place Trevor's hands over his own as he played in order to teach him the music. Now those haunting recordings by Morrison, who died in 2012, have been released alongside orchestral arrangements of the music by composers including James MacMillan (who also conducts on the album), Craig Armstrong, Rebecca Dale, Francis Macdonald and Christopher Duncan. In the video below, James MacMillan travels – with a piano! – to St Kilda to play this precious music.

Chris Conway released an album Ayurveda in 2003. That was a totally solo album, playing all of the instruments himself. Chris thought it would be interesting to weave in the textures offered by Neil Donoghue's sitar. Also that old album was quite a static one. On Ayurveda Gold Chris wanted each track to start meditaively and slowly develop with it's own character, evoking the element in each case.
