This new release too features five exclusive 7-inches, housing a total of 10 seriously rare tunes. All previously unreleased in physical format, the tracks have been carefully selected from the soundtracks of five obscure Italian films from the late ‘70s – sexy flicks that flirted with the line between erotic and explicit, and which are now largely forgotten, having been out of circulation for decades.

A young female singer in 17th-century Venice: she is virtuoso, attractive and extremely charming, and the gentlemen of her select audience are at her feet. They call her the ""Singing Venus"". But Barbara Strozzi wants more: she regularly publishes her compositions – more than any woman before her. The new BR-KLASSIK audio biography tells her story. Until the 20th century, female composers had a hard time in a male-dominated art. And in historiography for even longer: it was not until 1978 that a female American musicologist published the first specialist article on Barbara Strozzi.

"Sounds of Pamoja" is Nyege Nyege Tapes' latest foray into the world of Tanzanian Singeli, the breakneck dance strain that's quickly moved from Dar es Salaam throughout the world. Following "Sounds of Sisso", a compilation that focused mostly on the Tanzanian capital's Sisso Studios, this set highlights recordings from Duke's Pamoja Records. And while its predecessor brought attention to the producers, "Sounds of Pamoja" showcases the wide variety of MC talent under the Pamoja Records umbrella, with production mostly handled by Duke.

When Frank Zappa found himself stuck in a wheelchair for most of the year 1972 (after a "fan" pushed him off the stage in December of the previous year), he relieved his band (including singers Flo & Eddie) of its duties and turned to studio work.

Acres of Blue is the second volume of solo piano albums by Norwegian pianist Espen Berg, an organic extension of the most beautiful, Noctilucent (Atterklang, 2012).

With the release of her 1993 Blue Note debut, pianist Junko Onishi arrived as one of the most promising of Japan-born jazz musicians. Growing up in Tokyo, Onishi received classical piano lessons but became quite interested in jazz. She considers her style to be based on Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, and Ornette Coleman; her other recordings from the '90s include 1994's Live at the Village Vanguard. "Tea Times" was recorded and released in 2016 on Japanese Village Records label.

Vaughan Jones has his hands full with this repertoire. Rare (for which read ‘obscure’) music for violin from the late 19th and early 20th centuries is his speciality, and this disc represents work he does on the exploration, arrangement and transcription of this lesser-spotted repertoire. Like most music for solo violin presented as suites or sonatas, Bach casts his long shadow over many of them. And although they may not display the originality or depth of, for instance, Ysaÿe’s own examples, the two career-spanning sonatas of Benjamin Godard are a good example of a diverting snapshot in time. They offer a sentimentality amplified in the monomaniacal sonata of his Norwegian contemporary Christian Sinding and completely absent in the curiously sociopathic music of Franz von Vecsey.

Steely Dan’s 1977 classic, Aja, has been remastered for a new vinyl reissue overseen by Donald Fagen. It is the latest in a series of Steely Dan reissues, all remastered by Bernie Grundman. The new version of Aja, which comes without add-on accoutrements, is out September 29 (via Geffen/UMe).

François Thuillier was born in 1967 and belongs to the new generation of tuba players, renowned for their knowledge, inquiring minds and inventive style and known for playing a wide range of jazz and improvisational music with symphony orchestras.

Crafted specifically for cello duet, trio, and quartet arrangements, the album includes 12 original compositions, drawing influence from diverse world music traditions. As an illustration, Celloman presents Indian Carnatic essence in “Veena”; flamenco flavor in “Scenes of You”; jazz inspiration in “Dream in G.” Additionally, Celloman treats the listener to quieter pieces, such as the introspective “Kaleidoscope.”

If jazz remains the “sound of surprise”, Luxembourgish pianist Michel Reis still cleaves to that hoary definition of the music. While still attractively accessible, Reis’s solo improvisations constantly take unexpected directions. He plays the piano “straight”, but still somehow manages to make it sound deliciously unfamiliar, as if it was only invented yesterday. On his second recording as leader for CAM JAZZ, Reis dedicates his music For A Better Tomorrow.

“Redman International - We Run Things” is a deep dive into the catalogue of top-ranking Jamaican record producer Hugh ‘Redman’ James, featuring digital Dancehall scorchers from the likes of Gregory Isaacs, Sugar Minott, John Holt, Frankie Paul and many more. Redman first got his start with his idol, the Dub pioneer King Tubby, back in 1985 after he helped to reignite Tubby’s musical career by facilitating the purchase of a state-of-the-art mixing desk from the USA. He often worked with the hottest musicians on the island such as the Roots Radics and Steely & Clevie, the latter of which really helped to shape Redman’s signature sound, rough and tough basslines, digital drum machines with heavily syncopated rhythms and synth-infused melodies which resonated with the Dancehall massive in a big way.
