Renowned AIDS researcher and clinician Dr. Joseph Sonnabend, who was known for his groundbreaking work in HIV/AIDS research, had a hidden facet of his extraordinary life – as a composer. Despite his illustrious medical career, Joseph Sonnabend’s passion for composition remained largely concealed from the public eye. However, with this album, we are invited into his world of instrumental and chamber works, showcasing his exceptional talent and profound musical sensibility.

The CD/DVD package features the complete final two shows played on July 11, 1984, partly used for the Absent Lovers release. The CD contains entirely unreleased tracks. The DVD contains both shows in full, as well as two sections of footage filmed by legendary bassist and stick player Tony Levin in 1982.

Faridi delved into programming using C and Csound languages, crafting a sonic landscape that intertwines the realms of mathematics and music. As a pianist immersed in the classical repertoire, Kasra encounters counterpoint daily, with the works of Bach serving as a constant source of inspiration. Reflecting on the origins of musical expression, Faridi draw parallels between the concept of counterpoint and the primal echoes of sound reverberating within a cave, evoking a sense of ancient musical discovery. The use of the recorder, the oldest known instrument dating back 24,000 years, further enriches the sonic narrative, with its delayed and evolving sounds mirroring the gradual evolution of human understanding and civilization.

Zsela (ZHAY-la) knows that artistic arrivals take time. Five years since the hypnotic hush of her first single, 2019’s “Noise,” the ambitious artist has emerged with a debut album that is as much a force to be reckoned with as it is raw and vulnerable. Produced alongside close collaborators Daniel Aged (Frank Ocean, FKA twigs) and Gabe Wax (The War On Drugs, Soccer Mommy), Big For You effortlessly flows between grandiosity and intimacy to build a sonic landscape blossoming with introspection. The record is a quantum leap for an artist who has already taken giant strides as a performer in the years since her inaugural release, sharing stages with Cat Power, Caroline Polachek, Blood Orange, and Angel Olsen, not to mention appearances at the likes of Carnegie Hall and MoMA PS1 in New York and the Natural History Museum in Los Angeles.

After a two-year break and spending time living in Iceland, the Polish composer returns with a sorrow-filled collection of compositions for piano, synthesizers and drums that reflect on some of the darkest parts of life. The album is his attempt to find comfort but also meaning in music while going through the hardest of times he had experienced. “To me, it's not really an album, but more of a compilation of memories,” Griffiths explains.

Influential drummer Tony Williams recorded "Foreign Intrigue" in 1985 for the relaunched Blue Note label with pianist Mulgrew Miller and trumpeter Wallace Roney, who would both remain with Williams for the next few years in his quintet. Foreign Intrigue, featuring modern electronic instruments such as drum machines and synthesizers, also highlights the performances of veteran musicians Bobby Hutcherson on vibes and Ron Carter on bass.

This is Williams' debut record with his hard bop jazz quintet comprised of saxophonist Billy Pierce, trumpeter Wallace Roney, pianist Mulgrew Miller and bassist Charnett Moffett. Civilization features originals by Williams that heavily feature commanding drums, on the album the rest of the quintet plays to keep up with the vivacious drummer.

LeGrand Mellon is an American actress who guested as ‘Miranda’ in the mid-60s TV show, the spy/western hybrid The Wild Wild West starring Robert Conrad and Ross Martin. Marketed as a young but accomplished siren to rival contemporaries like Nancy Sinatra and Ann-Margret, LeGrand Mellon was seemingly plucked from the stage lot and dropped into the recording studio for a trio of singles for Columbia Records. “Baby Please Don’t Go” / “Summertime” was the final release after “Everybody But Me” / “Growin’ My Own” and “Move It On Over” / “The Sound Of The Blues”.

A reliably swinging presence and facile improviser on the New York scene since the late ‘80s, guitarist Greg Skaff has shared the bandstand with such jazz greats as Stanley Turrentine, Freddie Hubbard, David “Fathead” Newman and Ralph Peterson Jr., as well current notables like Mike LeDonne, David Hazeltine, Orrin Evans, Ben Allison, Jim Rotondi and Joe Farnsworth.
