Robben Ford, whose album Blue Moon is a typically hard-hitting modern blues-and-soul collection, has one of the most bewitchingly loose-limbed and attractive guitar tones in the business. Coupled with his effortless technique and penchant for honest-to-goodness blues phraseology, that makes him one of the most pleasing guitarists on the circuit. The fact that he's a decent singer and accomplished songwriter, as well as an eagle-eyed spotter of talent for his supporting bands, means you've got a pretty safe bet that he's going to serve up superior blues-drenched music with a light dose of modern soul. Blue Moon delivers on the bet, being a beautifully produced, lean and hungry set of performances that never strays far from the mother lode. It doesn't matter whether the drummer is Vinnie Colaiuta or Tom Brechtlen, the bassist Roscoe Beck or Jimmy Earl, each performance cooks, and not a note is wasted. With a blues style that is both modern and traditional and production values that are second to none, this is a very welcome release indeed.

Robben Ford & the Blue Line is an electric blues trio, but it's a trio whose leader and guitarist played with Miles Davis and Joni Mitchell, whose drummer Tom Brechtlein played with Chick Corea and Wayne Shorter, and whose bassist Roscoe Beck played with Leonard Cohen. In other words, this is a blues band with serious jazz and singer-songwriter ambitions. Not surprisingly, these former instrumental sidemen are a lot better at infecting the blues with harmonically sophisticated solos and tricky rhythms than they are at singing or songwriting on their album, Mystic Mile. Songs like "Busted Up" or "Moth to a Flame," both penned by Ford, don't offer much in the way of a lyric, melody, or vocal, but they do build a serious groove around a challenging syncopated figure, and Ford's guitar comes roaring out of the rhythm with solos that don't merely vamp on the chord changes but take those changes into new harmonic territory. Thus it's not surprising that the album's one instrumental, the uptempo blues workout "The Plunge," and the two cover songs, the Cream's "Politician" and B.B. King's "Worried Life Blues," are the highlights.

Of all of Robben Ford's albums, this is the one I keep coming back to. He's spread out in different directions since then, as any artist or musician with a nagging muse would do, and has done so wonderfully for the most part. If anyone ever wanted an encyclopedia (read: lesson) of blues-based electric guitar styles embedded in solid songsmanship and tunecraft, this CD is the one to reach for. The guitar playing on this album should set the standard by which all similar efforts are measured. It's solid, melodic, and it soars. The songs are wonderful, and don't wear thin after even years of repeated listening; the guitar playing is dynamic without ever descending into cheap or gratuitous virtuosity, although RF can let it rip as well as anyone when it suits the movement of the music and the spirit of the moment. The solos are both blazingly and subtly alive, amazingly well-constructed, their notes and melody lines seldom predictable yet honoring tradition and never contrived, and I could go on and on … This CD offers a good opportunity to get grabbed.

Three years after his solo album The Wildest Wish to Fly, pop producer and songwriter Rupert Hine came back under the disguise of the pseudo-group Thinkman. The three musicians who accompanied him in interviews and lip-sync performances were actors, the whole project becoming a concept revolving around media manipulation. The Formula, Thinkman's first album, sticks close to this idea (the title track begins with the lines "It's an interview/But it's a second take"). During the early '80s, Hine followed an evolution that led him from disturbing art pop to intelligent but more commercial songs. The Formula is pretty much middle-of-the-road but has a harder edge than the singer's previous LP. Songs like the title track "The Ecstasy of Free Thought" and "The Days of a Champion" are fueled by newly found energy and feature the hook-filled melodies that made Hine an important part of England's '80s pop music. More importantly, there are no weaker tracks, no jumping off the bandwagon for a quick one. As far as concept pop albums go, this one is particularly successful. The Fixx's James West-Oram provided guitar tracks and Stewart Copeland (ex-The Police) plays some real drums whenever the producer felt the machine was not enough – they are both featured on the closer "There Shines Our Promised Land." This album is more than a marketing curiosity, it can be considered as an essential part of Hine's discography. AMG
