This is a fabulous collection, even if you have got all his original albums. The range of music on offer here is amazing. The early tracks like 'Love Story' have a Phil Spector like feel to them. Big orchestral arrangements, contrast wonderfully with Newmans southern drawl and simple Piano parts. Later tracks perhaps, better show the true talent of this great songwriter. From beautiful ballads like 'I think its going to rain today' to various degrees of satire and wit (take your pick from many songs). Randy Newman wrote numerous hits for other people so 'Mama told me not to come' is better known as a Three Dog Night Hit. 'Simon Smith….' was a hit for Alan Price.
Picking favourite tracks is difficult, but upon recently listening to 'Political Science' again, its relevance today is the same as it was in 1972 when I think Nixon was President of the U.S. "South America stole our name, lets drop the big one they'll be no-one left to blame us". However 'My Life is Good.' remains my favourite for his indignant delivery "My Life is good you old bag". A splendid reference to Bruce Springsteen follows later in the song "Rand I'm tired how would you like to be the boss for a while" - cue a Clarence Clemons like Sax solo…
Randy Newman is a criminally under-rated musician and songwriter. Get this collection and find out what you've been missing. Better still if you ever get a chance to catch one of his rare concerts see him live. To that end the last track on the album is probably the best 'Lonely at the Top' (which I believe he wrote with Sinatra in mind), which captures Newman in concert alone at the Piano in 1970. Its just magical.

The third and last album by Rupert Hine under the disguise of the ghost group Thinkman, Hard Hat Zone walks away from the subjects of media manipulation and information games. Most of the pieces, still written by Hine with lyrics by Jeannette Obstoj, deal with environmental themes, with titles like "Mother Nature's Angry" and "November Whale" being quite explicit. The tone becomes vehement but also preachy in the solemn "Take Them to the Traitors' Gate," dedicated to Prince Charles (his involvement with environmental causes was avant-gardist at a time when it was not yet fashionable). The songs don't have the impact and hook-laden melodies of those on The Formula, but the singer/producer still did a good job. One can discard the failed hit single "Hard Hat Zone" to concentrate on "Who's Winning the Human Race?," "Act of Love," and "Exploring This World (Without Moving Too Much)." Geoffrey Richardson (Caravan) and Phil Palmer (Penguin Café Orchestra) add viola and guitar to Hine's keyboard tracks, but overall this album remains in the synth pop realm. Production is impeccable and even when not particularly inspired the man was able to churn out good songs, but Hard Hat Zone is more for the completist than the casual listener. AMG

The Bananamoon Obscura series is a set of limited edition discs released by Daevid through the Voiceprint label. They are not mainstream releases, but intended for collectors and die-hard fans. If you're a Daevid Allen (or Gong) freak then you'll want to hear these recordings!

Room Service is a rock album by Canadian singer/songwriter Bryan Adams released internationally in 2004 and in the U.S. the following year. "Open Road" was the first single taken from the album, followed by "Flying", "Room Service" and, as an American release, "This Side of Paradise". In the summer of 2005, "Open Road" was used the theme song in ESPN's SportsCenter series 50 States in 50 Days. "East Side Story" was originally going to be released on Chicane's cancelled Album Easy To Assemble with Bryan Adams on vocals, albeit with a completely different composition.

What a wonderful surprise! Even fans of Placido Domingo, who has recorded the role of Radames four times commercially will be amazed by his fresh voice and complete involvement, under Claudio Abbado's thoroughly engrossing leadership in this live 1972 performance, in very good sound. Martina Arroyo was an underrated Aida, and Fiorenza Cossotto spews rage as the jealous Amneris. Piero Cappuccilli gives us an Amonasro to fear and respect, and Nicolai Ghiaurov, is, as always, the perfect low voice in the ensembles. The La Scala forces are terrific. Dare I say it? This is the best-performed Aida.
