    The ‘rare collaboration’ means that Aloysius Bertrand’s Gaspard poems, translated by Christopher Fry, alternate with music. That is enough to make the disc unmissable for Gielgud fans. His iron-throat-in-velvet-mouth grace delivers a persuasive English parallel to Ravel’s stylised horror score. Bachauer ups the pace: her flair used to range much more widely than her thunderous Brahms Proms late in life. Sadly, ‘Le gibet’ has an unfortunate editing blip. The Debussy suits her generous, robust approach – Cécile Ousset is a modern parallel – while Stravinsky’s stamping rhythms are unstoppable. The piano tone breaks the cast-iron barrier to become a dizzy peal.

    Pianist Keith Jarrett has paid all sorts of tributes through his career, nodding to Ornette Coleman, Miles Davis, and Bill Evans. But on this two-CD set, Jarrett picks particular versions of tunes to play off. So he pays homage to Lee Konitz on "Lover Man" and Sonny Rollins on "All the Things You Are." His formula for the tributes makes the music surprisingly engaged, dropping lyrical twists in his nod to Anita O'Day and cool loops when tipping Jim Hall. Where some of the so-called Standards Trio recordings veer into impressionism without regard to direction, this collection maintains tempered balance, even finding a classic Jarrett groove on "Sun Prayer," which drummer Jack DeJohnnette drives with a taut rhythmic clip. Alas, the tune fades in the groove's midst. But the package is barely any less strong for the fade and, in fact, stands above most of the other standards recordings and offers you an excellent sound quality.

    A truly great album; one that came out soon after "Concerto," but didn't receive the attention it deserved. Hall's solos on Walk Soft, One Morning in May, and Indian Summer are superb. The entire album is wonderful: Ron Carter in top form, plus magnificent work by Tommy Flanigan and Art Farmer. All players on the album are terrific. An album worth having.

    ARMES, AMOURS… Par ces mots Eustache Deschamps ouvre son hommage au grand poète disparu en 1377, Guillaume de Machaut. «Armes, amours» brandies comme l'étendard de toute noblesse.

    A la fin du Moyen Âge, l'amour constitue toujours une source d'inspiration inépuisable pour les poètes et les musiciens, abordé tantôt selon la rhétorique courtoise des siècles passés (Jay pris amours; Est-il merchy …), tantôt sur un ton coquin (Ho, ho, ho; Ce qu on ait a quatimini).

    Par ailleurs, nombreuses sont les compositions qui témoignent ou portent la trace des guerres, des événements politiques et religieux contemporains. Ainsi, Helas, Olivier Basselin est une complainte sur l'emprisonnement du poète-musicien normand au cours de la guerre contre les Anglais, qui ne s'achève qu'en 1453 (officiellement en 1475). L'année 1453 est aussi celle de
    la prise de Constantinople par les Turcs qui progressent en Europe. A la Cour de Bourgogne l'Ordre de la Toison d'Or milite pour une nouvelle croisade. Dans ce contexte, la chanson de L'homme armé devient emblématique. Aussi Morton l'utilise-t-il dans son rondeau en l'honneur de «Maistre Simon le Breton», chapelain bourguignon parti affronter les Turcs.
