John Patitucci amply demonstrates that there's more to him than just great bass chops, but that there's a serious composer/arranger at work as well, one who's not afraid to experiment and try new things that will challenge himself and his listeners

Luminosity‘s two large ensemble works, “Self/Non-Self and Luminosity in the Bardo” and “Symphony of Drones #1,” come from quite different places. The former is inspired by reflections on the Tibetan Book of the Dead, the latter a structural exploration of improvisation via graphic notation. But they share a dark, serious, and moody tone.

For the Beauty of the Earth Bradley Sowash's final release in the acclaimed trilogy of hymns and spirituals for solo jazz piano has a decidedly personal feel. Some of the selections emphasize nature such as Shall We Gather By he River, The Ash Grove, and the title cut, For the Beauty of the Earth. Others dig deeply into jazz traditions such as the blues inflected Go Down Moses or a striding This Little Light of Mine. Whatever the style, Sowash's unique take on these timeless melodies both surprises and delights. Four bonus tracks include sample cuts from previous recordings. Designer Bryan Huber's spiritually suggestive packaging contributes to the sense of intimacy with a scrapbook format that includes excerpts from the artist's journals, pressed leaves and Frank Hunter's haunting photos of earthly pathways.

Triemer's sonatas aren't just empty music written to educate other cellists, or to edify wealthy patrons as background music; it has substance, but its effect is very subtle - movements seem longer than they are, and the overall sense of time passing in this music is slowed down. Artemis Quartet is maybe the most accomplished quartet of the past ten years, in my opinion much more perfect than, say the Prazak. They are making a recording of Beethoven complete cycle which will be, for sure, a new reference for the decade.

Deep Street Soul are funk DJ & drummer Agostino ‘Sol Loco’ Soldati, bass player & soul aficionado Papa ‘J’ Hunter, Cropper lovin’ Matt Green and Queen of the Hammond Ms. Monique ‘Mon Cherie’ Boggia. Getting together in early 06’ they formed with the simple aim of recapturing some old skool southern flavors they’d DJ'd over the previous decade. Inspired by the breakout of nufunk throughout Europe & the States (not forgetting Osaka Monaurail and Australia’s own - The Bamboos) they hit the clubs. Starting with an initial batch of Booker T & Meter’s covers, these quickly morphed into their own set of raw break filled funk & soul.

Teaming with local Melbourne soul/funk label Jaycees in early 07’, they released their first 45’ getdownHQ/deepstreet strut. The 45’ quickly sold out and saw rotation on stations & mixes worldwide. As a result, a new 45’ loose caboose/nasty was recorded for Jaycee’s early 08’ (which also sold out) and a special 3 track digital release was cut for Blair Stafford's Straightup Recordings label.

After hearing these tracks, Freestyle Records (UK) boss Adrian Gibson signed the band to his label. The vinyl re-release of Chilli Fried will drop on the 5th Oct 09 containing tracks from previous releases, the 1st single Kick out the Jams on the 12th Oct 09. The first LP is due for release on 16th Nov 09 - Recorded in late 2008 this album is funk of the down’n’dirty variety.
