Stiff Little Fingers - Nobody's Heroes [Remastered and Expanded]

This inspired and underrated Northern Ireland punk band never sounded better. On Nobody's Heroes, the group began to forge a way out of the genre's dead-end street with articulate lyrics, refined playing, and a slight softening of vocalist Jake Burns's barking delivery. Fortunately, these improvements did nothing to blunt the group's impact or visceral appeal. They sound defiant as ever as they reflect the tough urban realities of their Belfast home. Highlights include the title track, "I Don't Like You," and "Wait and See," a collective "up yours" directed at the establishment and other nefarious types. Also included is a great, hopped-up version of the Specials' "It Doesn't Make It Alright." [by Mike Corrigan, Amazon-com]

    ***

Arriving hot on the heels of the success of Slayer's debut SHOW NO MERCY, this seven-song live release features five tracks from that album, one from the HAUNTING THE CHAPEL three-song EP and another non-album track, "Aggressive Perfector." The heavy sound espoused on the band's debut translates nicely to the stage, and the band proves that it can deliver the goods, with Tom Araya's screams in fine form. With little exception, the songs here pretty much follow the arrangements of their studio counterparts, but they are imbued with the same energy and menace that made the recorded originals so appealing. Considering it would be years before the thrashing foursome would release a full-length live album, LIVE UNDEAD is good for hardcore fans seeking more documentation of Slayer's exciting early period.

In a change of pace, for this recording vibraphonist Cal Tjader recorded cool-toned bop without a Latin rhythm section. Half of the ten songs (mostly jazz standards) feature Tjader switching to drums (his original instrument) in a quartet also including the obscure trombonist Bob Collins, guitarist Eddie Duran and bassist Al McKibbon. Tjader is back on vibes for the quintet selections with tenor saxophonist Brew Moore, pianist Sonny Clark, bassist Eugene Wright and drummer Bobby White. He sounds right at home in both formats and the swinging quintet numbers in particular are a good reason to search for this valuable album.

After Porpora's Orlando, Juan Bautista Otero and his musicians continue their exploration of the late 18th century operatic repertoire. Here is Ifigenia, the masterpiece of Martin y Soler, inexplicably left languishing in obscurity until now. A sparkling orchestra, vocal soloists fully equal to every virtuoso challenge - the extraordinary dramatic effects of the sacrifice are performed here with an expressive power that makes this recording a benchmark version.

Johann Gottlieb Janitsch (1708-1763), was born in Silesia (then under Austria, but Prussia from 1742 and now part of Poland) and followed a normal career path for a musician in Mitteleuropa, culminating as contraviolonist in the Royal Orchestra of the Court of Prussia from 1736 until his death in 1763. Janitsch also composed ballet music for the Royal Court Opera), rehearsed the opera chorus, and composed music for the balls held at the opera house during carnival-time. Janitsch was also called on to participate in the intimate concerts that took place in the king’s private apartments at Sanssouci, alongside a number of instrumentalist-composers including C.Ph.E. Bach and Johann Joachim Quantz.

With the international commercial breakout of the Hives, the rock cognoscenti seem prepared to declare the whole of Scandinavia as the new Seattle, which will probably prove to be as much of a curse as a blessing, but it will certainly give the Flaming Sideburns a greater hearing outside their native Finland.

John Coltrane's debut for the Impulse label was a bit unusual, for the great tenor and his quartet were joined by a medium-sized backup group on Eric Dolphy arrangements of "Africa," "Greensleeves," and "Blues Minor." "Africa" in particular is quite memorable although Coltrane would not pursue any further recordings in this direction in the future, making this a change of pace in his discography. Allmusic 4.5*/5
