Making a bold return, genre-defying, North Carolina-bred quartet and live sensations Rainbow Kitten Surprise unveil their first full-length album in six years, Love Hate Music Box, via Elektra Entertainment / Parlophone. Produced by Daniel Tashian (Kacey Musgraves) along with Konrad Snyder (Noah Kahan) and Melo, the much-anticipated album ponders life’s ups and downs, and traces the turbulent trajectory of relationships, painted out loud in hues of pop, electronic, rock, and hip-hop. We spoke to Ghostly Kisses about “Darkroom”, their highly anticipated sophomore album out now on Akira Records. The French Canadian duo, Margaux Sauvé and Louis-Étienne Santais blend intimate fan-submitted stories with dark electronic pop across 12 tracks, further deepened by their “Box of Secrets” project. Building on the success of their debut album Heaven, Wait, which reached 150 million streams, “Darkroom” has already made strides with hits like “On & Off,” winner of the Biiblii International Track of The Year. Our taste spans from the old time fiddle tunes of our family, to Hip-hop of our urban up-bringing in ATL , to the deep roots and traditional instruments of the American South. With this new album Folk and Anchor, we wanted to create a body of work where all those influences could be showcased under one roof while giving a nod to some of our heros. Each song has been carefully selected from a long list of favorites because they each tell a story in and of themselves. Bára Gísladóttir (b. 1989) considers sounds, instruments and ensembles as living organisms. In VAPE, Hringla and COR, the Icelandic composer and double bassist engages with the largest musical organism of all: the symphony orchestra. Inspired by death metal or techno as much as by Scelsi or Penderecki, the foreboding atmosphere of her music is cut through with irony, puns and black humour. After all, organisms themselves – especially human bodies – contain the potential for both comic excess and self-annihilation. In these three works we follow Gísladóttir’s fascination with language and coincidence; we hear an uncompromising interrogation of the body’s excesses and ailments; and, most of all, we see life, vaporous and between states, neither dark nor light.
