The brilliant, energetic readings of Robert Casadesus and George Szell set a standard for this repertory that has yet to be surpassed. FORTÍÐ “Völuspá Part III: Fall of the Ages” is called the last and recent part of the Völuspá Trilogy. Head of the Band Eldur (also among others Curse, Pontentiam) has already after the foundation of the band FORTÍÐ a priori planned to set to music one of the most important Ásatrú literatures, the Völuspá, as a Trilogy. FORTÍÐ represent with “Fall of the Ages” seven epic Pagan-Metal-hymns. Own lyrics as well as lyrics from the Völuspá Saga were combined. The moods vary between ice-cold melody parts out of Black-Metal until hymnal Pagan-Metal Parts. With samples added an awesome nordic masterpiece was created which could not be better and more convincing transformed by an Icelander.

With a band called Nameless, it becomes more difficult to joke about obscure no-name acts. Not only that, but also based on the title of their debut release it is obvious that this group had a good sense of self-irony. A distinctive feature of The Overcome Of The Portuguese Bastards is the underproduced sound quality that gives the album almost punkish overtones. While this unavoidably tends to make the band sound sloppy even if undeservedly so, their musical style is also far from overpolished and therefore suitable for this kind of production. Most of the time this album is not exactly a speed demon, but what Nameless may lose in pure fury they partially gain back in the unruly "live" feel of their music. Even though the result may not suit everyone's taste, one can say that this album is bound to end on something of a positive note despite its rough qualities.

Véronique Sanson (full name, Veronique Marie Line Sanson, according to the ASCAP Songwriter's Database, born April 24, 1949, in Boulogne, near Paris, France) is a two-time Victoires de la Musique Award-winning French singer-songwriter, musician, and producer with an avid following in her native country. She brings a very personal vocal style to the singing of French pop songs: Her voice has a very strong vibrato. Today, Véronique Sanson is still considered to be one of the most talented French songwriters, and each of her appearance in the media is a popular event. Unlike most previous French artists of the Sixties and early Seventies, who mostly released EPs usually consisting of a collection of singles, B-sides and covers.

Guitarist Kenny Burrell has a strong all-around showcase on this release from Contemporary. Assisted by pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Rufus Reid, drummer Lewis Nash and percussionist Ray Mantilla, Burrell swings harder than he usually does when paying tribute to the past, coming up with fresh statements on the varied material.

Maurizio's second CD for Pacific Blues, recorded in Italy with guest artists Sugar Ray Norcia and Mark DuFresne is a rich mix of musical styles and voices. Each of the artists wrote songs especially for this recording, done live in the Gubbio Theater with the same fine musicians as the first CD, with some extra guest players. Blues, R&B flavored ballads and some swinging uptempo songs are the fare. The band and Maurizio's fine guitar mold themselves to each of the singers as if they had been together for years.

This CD is currently out of print, but it's worth a search. Unlike virtually everything else of Gencer's that has appeared on CD, these are all studio recordings in excellent sound (no prompters, no noisy audiences, no singing off mike). The four Donizetti items, conducted by Gianandrea Gavazzeni, are from 1974, while the four Verdi selections and the Catalani are from 1956 (with Arturo Basile conducting). Jeffrey Lipscomb, Amazon.ca
