***** Wow, After having been so long out of CD offerings Maneige is quite Quebec's newer attraction with a second posthumous live album, making it the fourth in their career. After 78's Composite (mostly then-new tracks) and 98' Live 74-75 album on Fonodisc featuring pre-debut album live recordings (ant two never-available-before tracks) and last year' "live a l'eveche" (which took the entire 98 recordings and added more tracks with some yet unreleased-before tracks). ProgQuebec is unleashing this superb release with yet another unreleased track!!……….

The entire November 22nd, 1975 concert at l'Eveche (Hotel Nelson, Old Montreal) takes up the bulk of this release. Most of the recordings from this concert have remained unreleased ever since CKVL-FM simultaneously broadcast the show on air. Two more pieces appear as bonus tracks from a previous CKVL-FM live broadcast from January 6th, 1974.

In 1855, the Fenice Theatre of Venice asked Verdi for a new opera, but the contract was signed only a year later, when the composer had already seen the outline of a work by the playwright Antonio Garcia Gutiérrez: Simon Boccanegra. The Maestro started writing his own version while in Paris, where he got Giuseppe Montanelli to shave down and model the libretto Francesco Maria Piave had already finished, communicating to Piave his modifications by letter, fait accompli. The opera opened on March 12th, 1857, with baritone Leone Gilardoni as Simon Boccanegra, bass Giuseppe Etcheverry as Fiesco, baritone Giacomo Vercellini as Paolo, and soprano Luigia Bendazzi as Maria/Amalia....

By the late 1970s, Kenny Drew had migrated to Europe, where he recorded extensively. This live trio date with the superb bassist Niels Pedersen and guitarist Phillip Catherine is worth looking for. "Django" opens with a lyrical Catherine acoustic solo before Drew and Pedersen take a bluesy detour. "Here's That Rainy Day" is given a lengthy workout, while the leader's "Sunset" opens with a meandering theme before evolving into a gentle ballad. The romping interplay within "Blues In the Closet" and "On Green Dolphin Street" close the performance with a flourish. Ken Dryden, All Music Guide
