The group's first album with Michael McDonald marked a shift to a more mellow and self-consciously soulful sound for the Doobies, not all that different from what happened to Steely Dan – whence McDonald (and Jeff Baxter) had come – between, say, Can't Buy a Thrill and Pretzel Logic…

Modernized Retro sound brought into New Milenium invoking strong imagery, and tells a story without saying a word! The album’s cover is telling, too, as every string plucked here belongs to a Fender, the only implicit thing about the record being the homage it pays to THE SHADOWS, which becomes obvious once the muscular chord of “The Reaper” starts hugging its gently rippling strum. Ringing in the years, its echo takes Ford down the memory lane, as no matter how long John’s been living on the other side of the Pond, the reminiscences he puts in “Granny Takes A Trip” still bear an imprint of foggy-eyed English psychedelia and “Tomorrow’s World” contrasts its futuristic self with an air of nostalgia, while out of the title cut the same axe carves a prime example of surf rock…

It's safe to assume that when Saxon's original lineup was formed in Barnsley, England back in 1977, the last thing that singer Biff Byford and guitarist Paul Quinn were thinking about was a 31st anniversary. Metal bands come and go, and it is hard enough to keep a band together for two or three years – let alone 31. But 2008, the year in which Saxon recorded their early 2009 release, Into the Labyrinth, did, in fact, mark the band's 31st anniversary – and the good news is that this 50-minute CD is quite faithful to the spirit of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal…

The marvelous title track alone, with Eddie Kendricks gliding into the stratosphere, made this an instant winner. There were several fine songs that weren't hits, such as "Not Now, I'll Tell You Later" and "I've Been Good to You," and there sure wasn't anything wrong with powerhouse cuts like "Ain't Too Proud to Beg." The Temptations would score four straight number one hits in the mid-'60s, each one an unforgettable classic.

Aoife O'Donovan sophomore album, "In the Magic Hour" - produced by Tucker Martine (The Decemberists, Neko Case) and out Jan. 22, 2015 via Yep Roc Records - is a 10-song album full of the singer's honeyed vocals mixed with gauzy, frictionless sounds: splashing cymbals, airy harmonies, the leisurely baritone musings of an electric guitar. Written in the wake of O'Donovan's grandfather's death, "In the Magic Hour" is her most introspective effort yet, an aching exploration of memory and mortality.

"Get Mooned" is a great slab of melodic hard rock that blends in a healthy dose of melodic metal. Plenty of bands have been blurring the melodic hard rock / melodic metal line for years now, and "Get Mooned" is a great example of what it sounds like when done right. The japanese version (DIGITAL REMASTER) of "Get Mooned" contains the bonus track "Crystal Eyes". The cover shows the band in front of an over-sized full moon. Worth mentioning is that this version contains many songs which were significantly reduced in play length when compared to the original release.

The Blue Hour was created by composer and pianist Federico Albanese to convey the magic of the transition between day and night, with its cross-currents of euphoria and yearning, when melancholy and remembrance merge. Albanese translates these sensations into music. The melodies he finds for them on the keyboard linger in the memory. Instrumentalized with a cello and sparing, tasteful effects, they grow into minimalist chamber symphonies. At the same time, The Blue Hour is pervaded with the pulsating rhythms of Albanese's new home city, Berlin.

Among jazz fans, you can have a lot of fun arguing whether “European Jazz” is a useful counterpoint to the American tradition, an original supplement thereto or “is worth less than American jazz on the market” as it can be read in a Wikipedia forum. There is no doubt that there have been and are gifted musicians this side of the Atlantic, who have molded and formed jazz for decades. They have developed very unique playing styles by merging European music traditions with American influences. To give these pioneers of European jazz a stage was the idea for the series of articles “European Jazz Legends”, which we launched in the magazine Jazz thing in our 100th issue in September 2013.
