V.A - Sources - The Underground Records Anthology (Compiled by Bill Brewster) (2015)
    Soul, Funk, Disco, Hip Hop | MP3 320 kbps | 3:41:34 min | ~507 Mb
    Label: Harmless | Tracks: 33 | Rls.date: 2015

Harmless has certainly kept Bill Brewster busy this year. This is the umpteenth label Anthology he's compiled over the last 12 months, and tells the story Arthur Baker's Streetwise Records (and, sneakily, its' lesser-known offshoots Partytime and Warlock) during the early-to-mid 1980s. While there are plenty of well-known club hits from the period included - think "Walking On Sunshine", "Confusion", "Music Is The Answer", and so on - it's the lesser-known or forgotten gems that standout. These include a clutch of killer proto-house and early "garage-house" jams (Pushe, Citispeak), some post-boogie electrofunk (Cuba Gooding Junior's forgotten "Got The Hots", a touch of Eartha Kitt), and a swathe of electro, hip-hop and freestyle cuts from the likes of Awesome Foursome, Air Force 1 and Dimples D.

    House, Deep House, Acid House | MP3 320 kbps | 03:46:58 min | ~519 Mb
    Label: Harmless | Tracks: 39 | Rls.date: 2015

2015 three CD set. The eighth release in the Sources series is the sister label to DJ International and an equally good source of authentic House music from one of the pioneer labels, Underground Records. In fact Underground records can be credited with scoring House music's first #1 hit with Steve 'Silk' Hurley's infectious "Jack Your Body" which hit the #1 slot in the U.K. at the beginning of 1987 and was probably responsible for spreading the growth of House music throughout Europe. Despite having scored such a huge hit with their first release, Underground stayed true to it's name and released scores of incredible records which have since become very collectible and have spawned some of the biggest names in House music history - Liz Torres featuring Kenny Jammin' Jason, MD111, Tyree, E.S.P., Fingers Inc, Fast Eddie Smith, Sterling Void, K-Alexi to name a few.

World Diary is quite distinct in style from Levin's later solo projects, but no less aesthetically pleasing. At first blush the work seems to fluctuate back and forth between laid-back modern arrangements and more "world-music" constructions. However, what unifies this work is Levin's own personal style in creating a cohesive mixture of modern jazz themes & instruments with simple acoustic world-music sounds.

Any chance that one has to hear a master musician in his or her preferred setting is a gift. For all the one-offs and ensemble by committee type of gigs that spring up, it is the reunion with familiar collaborators for a stint of a few nights that really becomes integral for the best performances.

    Progressive Rock

The Cleves' only album was competent but uninspiring, typical early-'70s progressive rock, all the material original save an eight-minute cover of "Summertime." With most of the songs hovering between five and seven minutes, it was given to long, not entirely purposeful vamps on organ and guitar, grinding out repetitive, basic hard rock riffs…

Classic Rock / Experimental Rock | Remastered | 14 Tracks

Following through with the avant-garde inclinations of Station to Station, yet explicitly breaking with David Bowie's past, Low is a dense, challenging album that confirmed his place at rock's cutting edge. Driven by dissonant synthesizers and electronics, Low is divided between brief, angular songs and atmospheric instrumentals…

New Wave / Rock / Post Punk / Contemporary Pop

A brilliant, accomplished debut, Look Sharp! established Joe Jackson as part of that camp of angry, intelligent young new wavers (i.e., Elvis Costello, Graham Parker) who approached pop music with the sardonic attitude and tense, aggressive energy of punk. Not as indebted to pub rock as Parker and Costello, and much more lyrically straightforward than the latter, Jackson delivers a set of bristling, insanely catchy pop songs that seethe with energy and frustration.

Announced via the Grateful Dead Almanac: Dave's Picks Vol. 17 is the complete show from July 19, 1974 at Selland Arena, Fresno, CA. Plucked from the Wall of Sound era, this one sees the band doing very big things including a 30-minute "Playing In The Band," a phenomenal "Scarlet Begonias," and "Weather Report Suite" with lots of great improvisational moments as well as a "Seastones" set. 7/19/74 has been on our shortlist for quite sometime and we can't wait for you to hear it mastered to HDCD specs.
