This is another swell two-for-one album pairing from the British wing of EMI. This one features two of June Christy's classic Capitol recordings, each of which showcases her in small-group jazz settings. The superior Ballads for Night People features Christy backed by a superb cool jazz group led by her husband, Bob Cooper. As befits its title, this session is generally dark in tone but it also really swings. The Intimate Miss Christy is more warmly romantic and finds the vocalist backed only by guitar, bass, and the occasional flute. This one is geared more toward fireside smooching then Christy's usual nocturnal regret or daylight exuberance. Christy was always a great interpretive vocalist, but she was at her most relaxed and natural in the type of small-group jazz settings that are featured on these two albums.

"Brunanburh" is actually a famous battle in ~937ad which resulted in the unification of the British Isles into what we now know as the "United Kingdom". To summarize quickly, it was an Anglo-Saxon victory, led by Æthelstan King of England, over the combined Norse-Celtic force which effectively forced all the kingdoms of the British Isles to consolidate into the positions they occupy today. A majority of the knowledge involving this battle are reflected in a poem which can be found freely on the internet\, as well as artifacts. It seems the exact location of the battle is still being determined even to this day……

Eddie Montgomery (brother of John Michael) and Troy Gentry are equal parts country music that comes from Merle Haggard, George Jones, Wynn Stewart, Dwight Yoakam, and even Hank Williams. At the same time, they play a scorching brand of rock & roll that has everything to do with the aforementioned heroes of the 1970s and the Allmans too because the blues are at the root of everything they do….

From the late '40s on, he eloquently defined the city's aggressive, swaggering, Delta-rooted sound with his declamatory vocals and piercing slide guitar attack. When he passed away in 1983, the Windy City would never quite recover. Like many of his contemporaries on the Chicago circuit, Waters was a product of the fertile Mississippi Delta. Born McKinley Morganfield in Rolling Fork, he grew up in nearby Clarksdale on Stovall's Plantation.
