Few artists ever seek to completely re-invent themselves on record, and fewer still make the transformation as completely successfully as did Tom Waits. His 70's albums are revered for their delicate, string-landen piano work with Waits croaking out lyrical strands of barstool philosophizing in a pseudo-Louis Armstrong growl. These albums are good, strong efforts, but they had become somewhat predictable by the time of 1980's Heart Attack & Vine (although that album, and it's predecessor, Blue Valentine, had started to introduce new elements into Waits's music.)……

Throughout the 1970's, Tom Waits desperately sought to craft himself as a traditional balladeer, a singer-songwriter for the masses. This process was always undermined, though, by the fact that every time he tried to sing an emphatic note, he sounded like a blue tick hound with its scrotum caught in a revolving door. It was with this 1980 release that he came to realize this wasn't a handicap, it was an instrument he could play as effectively as he played his guitar and piano…….

The proceeding is to suggest that while the jazz world is indeed grateful for Holland's continued prominence and regular recording activity, somehow his most recent affairs just don't seem to have the same freshness and titillation as we seemed to find in such gems as Seeds of Time, The Razor's Edge, and Extensions. Of his most recent ECM dates, Prime Directive is certainly the strongest of the lot, but it too can suffer at times from a nagging sense of one-dimensionality. The opening title cut is indicative of Holland's modus operandi, with lots of dense collective improvisation over a bass vamp before yielding to a string of individual solos. "Looking Up" throws everything into the pot, starting with an odd-metered head that eventually settles into a waltz tempo, only to then be spelled by an up swing tempo in four.
Personnel: Dave Holland- bass; Chris Potter- soprano, alto, & tenor saxophones; Robin Eubanks- trombone; Steve Nelson- vibes & marimba; Billy Kilson- drums

    FROM MY PERSONAL CD COLLECTION

Various Artists - Instant Party Disc : Regular Strength

Usually, I don't buy compiled discs for one simple reason - not all the songs are upto the taste, and listening tends to lose the tempo as soon as the first few tracks are knocked out of the way. It is quite strange that compilations, sometimes, tend to have more fillers than studio albums. However, over a period of time, I have collected a few that I found to be exceptional. Most of them have some kind of theme based upon which the songs were picked. The album you are looking at belongs to Rhino's Instant Party Disc series issued in the late 90s. The idea was to present a pack of most wanted party songs from the not-so-recent times. This disc has some of the best singles from yesteryears, and will have you swayin' and swingin' in no time. Top moments include "Tequila", "Hot Hot Hot", "Mony Mony", and "That's The Way I Like It". Enjoy!

Genre: Jazz, solo piano | Label: CAM Jazz (CAMJ 7824-2) | Year: 2009

Enrico Pieranunzi's new solo album, following the global success of Scarlatti.
Through the multiple facets which make up each of its pieces, Wandering yields a portrait of Enrico Pieranunzi. Thanks to a magnificent pianistic mastery, to an extended dynamic and to the amplitude of his sound palette, the artist manages not to be repetitive albeit remaining himself in every instant.

Zoi Tiganouria brings back to life unique tango sounds inspired by Carlos Gardel, Richard Galliano, Astor Piazzolla, Vassilis Tsitsanis, Stamatis Kraounakis, Beatles, Sezen Aksu, as well as Greek folk. She sounds both groovy and touching and looks sexy at the same time. Recommended!

    Rock | MP3 | EAC / LAME 3.97 V0 (VBR) | 6 CDs | 711 MB

LIVE IN NEW YORK is a six-disc collection that contains all four of The Doors’ final tour performances—in their entirety—recorded in 1970 at the Felt Forum in New York City. Recorded January 17 and 18, 1970—just a few weeks before the release of Morrison Hotel—these concerts find Jim Morrison, John Densmore, Robby Krieger, and Ray Manzarek locked in tight as they deliver smoking takes on soon-to-be-classics from their forthcoming album.

Fans will be blown away by the crisp sound found on LIVE IN NEW YORK. All four shows were mixed and mastered by the band’s longtime engineer, Bruce Botnick, who recorded a number of shows from The Doors’ 1970 tour on multi-track tape for the Absolutely Live album. Sadly, these shows represent The Doors’ final New York City performances with Morrison, who passed away July 3, 1971.
