    Prokofiev: War and Peace

    Filmed at the Opéra Bastille (Paris National Opera) in 2000, this is a stunning achievement photographed with cinematic flair and performed with singular beauty by all involved. Music director Gary Bertini conducts the French orchestra with a fitting balance of epic drama and emotional depth. An impressive achievement given how sprawling Prokofiev's music can be here. Kudos also to the impressive sound and dramatically effective lighting, especially during the "War" section. It is no wonder the ending bows and curtain calls seem endless. There is an accompanying documentary on both discs, which runs about eighty minutes in total. In surprising detail, Zambello shares how she coordinated this effort, and it is eye-opening to see the intensive rehearsals and personal interviews with the cast. Strongly recommended.

    Many, perhaps most, listeners may lose interest in this disc of Schnittke's three piano concertos after the first concerto ends. But some, not a lot, perhaps, but a very enthusiastic minority, will gain interest after that. The Concerto for piano and orchestra from 1960 shows the influence of Bartók, with lots of brass and percussion in the outer movements and plenty of swashbuckling pianism throughout. The Concerto for piano and strings from 1979, however, is a more dissonant, allusive, and often frankly brutal work, and the Concerto for piano four hands and chamber orchestra from 1988 is more fractured and fractious still, driving the soloists and the orchestra to the brink of collapse in the climaxes.

    Nina Hagen - Revolution Ballroom (1994) {Mercury}

    If you are a Nina Hagen fan, this is one of her best. This CD is probably the most commercial one she's done but also has excellent production, writing and of course, singing.
    I've loved everything I could get of Nina's since the self titled album. This album is typically strange. Really it starts off with a country and western sound (in a kitsch way). Moving into ballad form with "King of Hearts", then pop trash "Pillow Talk", blues with "I'm Gonna Live the Life" and then finishing with I think the first of her Indian inspired work with "Omhaidakhandi".

    Cappella Marciana - Marco Gemmani (Conductor)

    The songs recorded on "Voce mea ad Dominum" (quotation from Psalm 77) are part of the repertoire that in recent years has enriched the liturgical life of the Basilica di San Marco in Venice, thanks to the art of the Cantores Sancti Marci, a music ensemble active in St. Mark's since the XIII-XIV century, and thus one of the oldest, still active, institutions of music in the world.
    These compositions are a glimpse of the Venetian sixteenth century through its greatest composers: Croce, Willaert, Bassano and Gabrieli. It is music born in the liturgy for the liturgy, in a unique place where, over time, prayer and diplomacy, Church and State concurred to support and promote artistic experiences that have enriched not only Venice, but the whole world. The sounds, the contrasts, the harmonic colour, the praxis of double choirs are among the most recognizable features of the Venetian music at the end of '500, a point of convergence of the best composers in Europe, still able to inspire emotions in the XXI century.
