All Music Guide ReviewHits & Rarities/ Singles A's & B's is a nicely put together double-CD set from Repertoire Records – it's actually a more expansive version of Edsel Records' Omnibus: The 60s Singles A's & B's issued that same year, assembling the Move's 40 official U.K. single releases (or, more properly, non-LP releases, since there are some EP sides represented), all dating between 1966 and 1974 (that latter date is a result of the belated 45 rpm issue of "Do Ya"). It's safe to say that no band this side of the Beatles (and perhaps not even them) ever packed more creative and challenging elements into their 45's, on the A-sides as well as the B-sides, than the Move did. Though they released four albums during this same period, the latter were so infrequent that they couldn't be the group's main vehicle for expression or experimentation – it was the 7" platters that served this purpose, and it's even more to the credit of Roy Wood and company that they were able to pull that off successfully for five years.

The Easy Star All-Stars have taken the same magic that rendered "Dub Side of the Moon" a phenomenon and applied it to another of the twentieth century's greatest recordings: "OK Computer." Most tributes phonographically copy the original band or fall embarrassingly short in the attempt. Both types are dull. A good tribute pays homage to the parent while simultaneously making a fresh interpretation. "Radiodread" accomplishes this goal in a meaningful way. The primary genre here is roots reggae with tones of dub, ska, rock and soul.

Al Jarreau has one of music's great voices, a blend of silky highs and a warmly resonant midrange that's absolutely his own, and he's used it to great effect in the past with hits like "After All" and "We're in This Love Together." On his first studio recording since 1994's Tenderness, Jarreau continues to blur the lines between R&B, jazz, and pop. His skill with romantic ballads is reinforced from the outset with "Just to Be Loved" and "Let Me Love You," and the theme continues later in a soaring duet with Vanessa Williams on "God's Gift to the World." But Jarreau is never stuck in one groove…

' This is one of the great albums of all time, and is by far the most coherent, interesting and powerful album that James Brown was involved with. With Maceo Parker back on board to work with Fred Wesley and the gang at the height of their creativity, the album comes together as a coherent whole, exploring a number of funk and jazz themes. The album gives extended solo time to the horn players, while the guitar and bass players set up rock-solid foundations. The drumming and percussion are all superb. Even the mellow numbers on this album don't succumb to dullness, kept crisp by the sharpness of the band. The longer songs also challenge funk conventions, particularly since most of them don't even have vocals. This is a crucial album that every funk fan should have.' Rob.Clough@duke.edu

This is a superb collection of Vinton's most productive years at Epic, and the most complete such greatest hits disc on the market today. All of his major singles are here, except for 1964's "Clinging Vine," and his 1974 comeback on ABC, "My Melody of Love." The latter may be a casualty of inter-label licensing, but the omission of the former is mysterious. Sound quality is excellent, with finely produced true stereo throughout.

Weather Report's third studio album "Sweetnighter" is a unique recording: it includes the least structured, open-ended music that they recorded. Also, the first hip-hop beat ever recorded can be found on this multi-percussion, funky album, which propelled Weather Report to "Jazz Group of the Year" honors in the 38th Annual Down Beat Readers' Poll.

Disc one culls some of his finest solo studio performances. Disc two places him in small group studio contexts, including duets with guitarist Herb Ellis, a trio with Oscar Peterson on piano and Ray Brown on bass, and a quartet with Duke Ellington on piano, Brown on bass, and Louis Bellson on drums. Disc three consists of live solo and group performances. Disc four features Pass accompanying vocalists Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan, plus duet tracks with guitarist John Pisano, tenor saxophonist Zoot Sims, and bassist Niels-Henning Orsted Pederson.

Beyonce had little to prove on her second solo outing, B'DAY, having already demonstrated her taste, (solo) vocal prowess, and sparkling star quality on her first post-Destiny's Child release in 2003. Nevertheless, the singer and her crackteam of producers and collaborators (R&B's finest, including the Neptunes, Swizz Beats, and Rich Harrison) have come upwith a collection that's at least equal to her previous triumphs, and that shows off an almost angry intensity only hinted at on earlier releases.

Feldman felt he had created a masterpiece with his first string quartet, which gained the nickname "100 minutes" based on its first performance in NYC, May 4th, 1980, because it lasted well over 90 minutes. This recording from 1993 by the Group for Contemporary Music (reissued by Naxos in 2006), isn't quite that long – it's only 78 minutes! In February, 1981 the String Quartet was performed at the CalArts Contemporary Music Festival, and Feldman later said that the audience was so full of tension that it was "like a lynch mob."
