Leander began her career in the late 1920s, and by the mid 1930s her success in Europe, particularly in Germany and the Scandinavian countries, led to invitations to work in the United States. Leander was reluctant to relocate her children, and opted to remain in Europe, and from 1936 was contracted to work for the German Universum Film AG (UFA) while continuing to record songs. Joseph Goebbels, a leading Nazi Party member, once suggested that she was Jewish because Zarah is a variation of the Old Testament name Sarah. She silenced him by noting that Joseph was also a Biblical name. This disc is a compilation of her best songs, 16 tracks altogether, all in German.

Nine years after the breakup of the final version of Return to Forever, Chick Corea ended a long period of freelance projects by forming his Elektrik Band. This set, the group's initial release, finds Corea meeting up for the first time with the great bassist John Patitucci and drummer Dave Weckl; half of the selections also have either Carlos Rios or Scott Henderson on guitar. Due to the high musicianship, the personalities of the players, and Corea's colorful compositions, the Elektrik Band quickly became one of the top fusion groups of the late '80s.

Love Is the Thing, a No. 1 album in the early LP era, is best known for Cole's rendition of "When I Fall in Love." The entire slate of Gordon Jenkins-orchestrated classics is a fine affair, though, with "Stay as Sweet as You Are" a particular standout. The pinnacle of smoothness.

"Goodbye" showcases both sides of Cream: that of a late-'60s pop band and that of an unchained blues-rock powerhouse. The live tracks on side one are highly improvised affairs. (How Clapton is able to play such laid-back and tasty blues over the relentlessly aggressive Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker is a mystery.) A fitting way to go out, Goodbye captures all that is good about Cream, and is one of the band's proudest moments.

Original Release Date: 1963 | Remastered Audio CD (2008.12.3) | Label: Verve / Universal Music (UCCU-9418) [SHM-CD] JAPAN

Antonio Carlos Jobim, Brazilian composer of such popular songs at "Desafinado" and "The Girl From Ipanema," derived his unmistakable songwriting style from a very personal sense of melody and harmony, the magnificent songwriting traditions of Brazil, the rhythm of the samba, and American jazz. The Composer of "Desafinado", Plays was the LP Jobim created when the bossa nova wave hit the US. It showcases his own piano with string accompaniment (with results far different from the bossa nova efforts of Stan Getz, Joao Gilberto, et al). Remastered from the original three-track tape, Jobim's greatest songs are now in their best sound.

This CD reissue brings back material that guitarist Larry Coryell recorded for the Novus subsidiary when it was run by Arista. Most of the set matches Coryell with fellow guitarists John Scofield and Joe Beck in acoustic trios, two duets and one overdubbed solo performance. The variation of moods and the jazz-oriented material make this summit meeting a success even if the guitarists tend to sound more distinctive on their electric counterparts; after about 20 minutes of similar sounding acoustic guitars, it is difficult not to doze off. Expanding the original program are four Coryell solo acoustic performances that were originally included in the Arista Novus LP European Impressions. Once again, they are well played but primarily of interest to guitarists.

Playing uninspired background "Muzak" had brought Bob James commercial success, and financially, he certainly had no incentive to change. Despite employing such talent as David Sanborn (alto sax), Hubert Laws (flute), Ron Carter (bass), and Idris Muhammad (drums), Touchdown is a bland throwaway. Overproduction is the rule here, and their talents are largely smothered by James' excessive production and trite arrangements. This CD does contain James' likeable "Angela (Theme from Taxi)," but most of the songs on Touchdown are pure schlock.

Lavay Smith and Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers' much anticipated third album blows away all expectations. With each CD Lavay's voice has developed and matured to become even more soulful and masterful than it was to begin with! This lady is all class and clearly has the chops to handle some of the greats. Indeed, Chris Siebert's arrangements and the musicality demonstrated by this band as a whole are more than just a fitting tribute to some of the greatest swing, jazz and blues legends ever known…. they allow the album to achieve a greatness in its own right. In all, this album (like the rest of the Skillet Lickers' albums) takes us back to a better time in music, and is a much welcomed and much needed treat!
