    One of new age electronic music's earliest and best-known proponents, Shadowfax was formed in Chicago in 1972 by saxophonist Chuck Greenberg, guitarist G.E. Stinson and bassist Phil Maggini. Originally a blues band, the trio soon began exploring chamber jazz and folk; even medieval music began creeping into the mix, appropriately enough for a group named in honor of a horse from J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings series. Adding drummer Stuart Nevin in 1974, Shadowfax issued their debut LP, Watercourse Way, two years later; failing to make an immediate impact, the quartet did attract a cult following which continued to grow following their subsequent signing to the Windham Hill label. 1982's eponymously titled effort was their commerical breakthrough, reaching the upper rungs of the Billboard jazz charts; for the follow-up, 1983's Shadowdance, Shadowfax's ranks swelled with the additions of violinist Jamii Szmadzinski and pianist/synth player Jared Stewart. The group endured multiple personnel changes in the years to follow, with founding members Greenberg and Maggini both remaining constants well into the 1990s

    Joni Mitchell - Shadows And Light (1980) [2CD] {Asylum HDCD Remaster}

    Although this incredible live unit never recorded a proper studio album we do have this as a reminder of just what is possible. Joni the folkie briefly became Ms. Mitchell the jazz singer, supported by the formidable talents of Pat Metheny, Lyle Mays, Jaco Pastorius, Michael Brecker and Don Alias. Many of Mitchell's jazz flirtations are given the full treatment with musicians who understood both her and the genre. It is a staggering marriage of talents and wholly successful. There are even obligatory bonus solos from Pat and Don. They should have stayed together for at least another album.

    Jazz, Latin Jazz, Jazz Flute | Original Release Date: June 28, 2005 | Label: HighNote Records (HCD4121)

    The most unusual aspect of this release from flutist Dave Valentin is that he performs the two swing standards "I've Got the World on a String" and "I Remember You." The style of music Valentin plays is unchanged from his other CDs, being lightly funky, utilizing Latin rhythms, and having his flute on top much of the time. Baritonist Ronnie Cuber guests on "Passion Fruit," but otherwise Valentin is just joined by a large rhythm section with his usual pianist Bill O'Connell. He plays as fluently as usual and, although there are no other surprises, the music is pleasing, danceable, and reasonably creative. By Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

    In early 1986, an inspection of the MGM vaults in Kansas yielded an amazing discovery: buried deep in these underground cellars was a long-forgotten collection of outtakes from the concert films "Thats the way it is" and "Elvis on tour".
    It was the most highly anticipated release of any Elvis footage ever and fans besieged Graceland hoping to get an early glimpse of these rare outtakes…

    The Five Bridges Suite is a modern piece of music, written in the 1960s, combining classical music and jazz. Written about the UK city of Newcastle upon Tyne, it was released as an album by The Nice which achieved the number two position in the UK album charts. In the Q & Mojo Classic Special Edition Pink Floyd & The Story of Prog Rock, the album came #29 in its list of "40 Cosmic Rock Albums". The work was commissioned for the Newcastle Arts Festival and premiered with a full orchestra conducted by Joseph Eger on October 10, 1969 (the recorded version is from October 17 in Croydon's Fairfield Halls). The title refers to the city's five bridges spanning the River Tyne (two more have since been built over the river), and the album cover features an image of the Tyne Bridge. more…
