This is an utterly fascinating tribute to the music of Thelonious Monk. Most of the selections feature the unusual trio of tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano, guitarist Bill Frisell (who with his wide range of original sounds is really a one-band band), and drummer Paul Motian. Tenor saxophonist Dewey Redman and pianist Geri Allen are guests on two songs apiece and fit in quite well with the sparse but very complete trio. Among the ten Monk songs explored, taken apart and given surprising treatment are "Evidence," "Bye-Ya," "Ugly Beauty," and "Trinkle Tinkle." Recommended to open-eared listeners…

Heather Keizur, a jazz vocalist who sings in both English and French, is emerging as one of the most unique and gifted singers on the Northwest Jazz scene. When asked what draws her to songs, Heather says, "Passion. In order for me to be drawn to a song, it needs to have a certain element of passion to it. That way when I sing it, I can feel it and pass the story of the song on to those who are listening." Heather recorded her first full length CD in August of 2010. Prime Cuts is a compilation album by Jordan Rudess released in 2006. It features performances by Robert Berry, Marc Bonilla, Terry Bozzio, Jerry Goodman, Tony Levin, Rod Morgenstein, John Petrucci, Simon Phillips, Mike Portnoy, Kip Winger, and Mark Wood. It contains two previously unreleased duets with Jordan and Kip Winger. The amazing thing about Jordan Rudess -Prime Cuts- is that, much like most of the Prime Cuts series, it flows as if the songs were meant to be compiled in this order, even though there are varying styles and artists performing them.

Chockshut is the evidence that the Koch-Schütz-Studer trio have expanded their lineup, and consequently, their ability to wreak havoc on musical structures everywhere. Adding a guitarist like Stephan Wittwer, for whom heavy metal and free jazz are synonymous terms, or trombonist Andreas Marti, with his penchant for lower-register sheets of sound, or a pianist such as Jacques Demierre, who writes music and plays in the theater, creates a sextet of uncommon possibility. True to form, the ten selections on Chockshut are full of sharp cuts and quick maneuvers to break the music out of any recognizable compositional form.
