Rigmor Gustafsson has always known that her personality comes out best when singing melodious jazz. To do that realisation justice, she seeks out special music-making constellations and fascinating combinations. On When You Make me Smile , she now takes this to the next level: In addition to her working band , with the trusted companions Jonas Östholm on the piano, Martin Höper on bass and Jonas Holgersson on the drums, she not only gathers an illustrious team of guests around her, like the woodwind and flute player Magnus Lindgren, trombonist Karin Hammar and guitarist Max Schultz, but also an almost 30-strong orchestra. Together with the Dalasinfoniettan, one of the leading orchestras in Sweden, with a wealth of experience in many different styles, the music shines in symphonic splendour and is lent a colourful expressiveness. This represents the fulfilment of a heartfelt dream that Gustafsson has had for a long time.

‘Love Life and Strings is an amazing debut album from experienced performer Diane Shaw which recalls the golden age of Soul from the late 60’s- early 70’s featuring real musicians and a string and horn section. Some of the songs are self penned, others are new songs by vintage writers plus there are a few covers. ‘Leave a little love’ is a wonderful dramatic uptempo string laden song arranged by Bert DeCoteaux and Andy Birkenshaw, that could have been made 40+ years ago. ‘Never Been Hurt’ and ‘Today I started loving you’are great 70’s style Modern Soul dancers that really swings. ‘These tears are real’ and ‘No More Love to give’ are Philly style mid tempo ballads, ‘Good Lovin Man’ and ‘I Go To Pieces’ Northern Soul dancers and ‘Thing That you do’ a lovely stepper using ‘Mellow Mellow right on’rhythm. This ambitous and optomistic album has that feel good factor and deserves to be one of the Soul albums of the year.

"40 Years and Still Riding High" is a Re-Record of the best of from the first 3 albums: MOXY I, MOXY II and Riding High. This is what founding member Earl Johnson had to say: 'It has been a long career for MOXY and what better way to celebrate the music for our 40th anniversary then releasing "40 Years and Still Riding High" and "Live In Toronto". It gives me great pleasure to see these classic songs come to life with some fresh blood and a brand new recording. We didn't just re-master the songs like a lot of people are doing today but instead we stripped them down, built them back up and re-recorded them to be more contemporary sonically with the recordings of today. When MOXY first exploded onto the scene in 1974 with their hit song 'Can't You See I'm a Star' They were destined to become part of the alumni of heavy hitting Canadians making a mark in the U.S.A.

Greatest Ever Soft Rock brings together some of the most satisfying examples of power ballads and emotive rock and pop tracks ever recorded. Toto, Cyndi Lauper and The Cars cruise alongside Thin Lizzy, Kiss and Chicago to give a fully rounded listening experience, dancing in the moonlight or walking in Memphis! Alternative pop/rock is essentially a catch-all term for post-punk bands from the mid-'80s to the mid-'90s. There is a multitude of musical styles within alternative rock, from the sweet melodies of jangle-pop to the disturbing metallic grind of industrial, yet are all tied together by a similar aesthetic – they all existed and operated oustide of the mainstream. In some ways, there are two waves of alternative bands, with Nirvana's unprecedented crossover success in 1991 acting as a dividing point.

It seems increasingly common for once-popular artists to resurface years after their heyday. What's so interesting is how they resurface. Who would've imagined Rita Coolidge, like other popular '70s singers, re-emerging 30 years down the line as a singer of jazz classics? But Coolidge, like Debby Boone before her, has done exactly that, releasing a collection of classic songs on Concord Records. Backed by a small jazz combo, And So Is Love has a classy feel to it, but it's Coolidge's resonant vocals that bring the set together. While most of the material is older, and a number of pieces like "Cry Me a River" and "Come Rain or Come Shine" come from the golden age of song, she also includes Boz Scaggs' "We're All Alone" and makes it work. In fact, "We're All Alone" is one of the highlights of the album, with Coolidge transforming it into a lovely jazz standard.

Paquito D'Rivera's alto and clarinet skills were ably displayed on this session, which featured him working in Afro-Latin, salsa, funk, swing and hard bop. Compositions ranged from intense, jam-flavored numbers with torrid solos, like "Recife's Blue" and the title tune, to introspective ballads, group pieces with rhythmically explosive sections and numbers displaying classical influences. The unifying force was D'Rivera, who also played tenor, but was most prominent on clarinet, doing both swing-oriented and looser, freer solos.

Ten’s newie touches on just about everything that the band is known for - Gary Hughes’ simple, but warm vocals; pomp flavoured hard rock tunes that run the gamut from simple to epic; totally bonkers lyrics about spectral astrology, mandrake twilight, dragons, distressed wenches and stuff like that; and a comforting knowledge that band ringleader Hughes knows where his strengths are and plays to them…

Air Conditioning was the November 1970 debut album by British rock group Curved Air. It reached number 8 in the UK albums chart in December, 1970. An incredible slice of early 70's prog that is marred by a slight disruption from time to time where the instruments do not all fit together, but for the most part this is groundbreaking stuff that deserves to be remembered.

A few of Stevie Wonder's songs have been performed by jazz musicians, but this CD by saxophonist Dave Pietro is one of the first extensive explorations of his work outside of pop. Pietro shifts between soprano, alto, and C-melody saxophones (the latter instrument hasn't been used very much in jazz since the '30s). Pietro's playing is very strong throughout the date, and his arrangements are first-rate, often contrasting sharply with the composer's original approaches. "Another Star" features Pietro's superb C-melody sax in a modal setting that seems to occasionally hint at Miles Davis' "Nardis." His tasty soprano sax is a highlight of "The Secret Life of Plants," a song that could be overlooked by jazz fans who haven't heard Wonder's original record, because such a title might easily be mistaken for a typical new age release.
