It is a logical choice for modern day violinists to produce their obligatory tribute to the greatest all-time player of the instrument, Stéphane Grappelli. Florin Niculescu, apparently a late bloomer as a leader (he logged in many years with the group Pearl Django,) has an advantage, being of European descent and displaying a verve comparable to the spirited Grappelli. Straddling the line between 1930s hot jazz, swing, and be-bop, Niculescu has learned his lessons well, mixing in his own compositions with that of Grappelli's. He also has picked an interesting backup band, with the outstanding pianist Peter Beets, American rising star bassist Darryl Hall, and capable drummer Bruno Ziarelli in tow. Three hours before the sun went down, creating a beautiful atmosphere at the ´Bang Your Head´ festival in Balingen/Germany, where Axel Rudi Pell celebrated his 25th anniversary as a solo artist with a once-in-a-life-time performance. The CDs and DVDs document a show that is unlikely to ever be seen again in this constellation – a special present the protagonist had worked hard for. As Axel is an early bird, the whole organisation was fairly easy. Of course there were rehearsals, but only one day before the show. Over fifty minutes worth of footage from those remarkable sessions are featured on the DVD and Blu-ray versions of this package.
