    Bering Strait - Pages (2005)
    EAC-Rip | FLAC-tracks +cue +log +Booklet/Scans | June 28, 2005 | ~277 MB
Genre: Country | Label: Universal South | Fserve, Fsonic

This sophomore album from Bering Strait, the clutch of Russian musicians with classical chops, makes less of a plea for mainstream success than their 2003 debut, settling more into a sort of Nickel Creek groove, with moody meditations on life and love and a flash-fingered, 'grassy, Jerry Douglas-produced instrumental, "From Ankara to Izmir," that should have live audiences standing up in wild cheers. They mine the Slavic mood on their opener, "Safe in My Lover's Arms," and its successor, the folk song "Oy, Moroz-Moroz," then move along to cover (less successfully) Fleetwood Mac's "You Make Lovin' Fun," in which lead vocalist Natasha Borzilova never manages to get a grip on the song's tense undercurrent. Ultimately, with the addition of the jazzy instrumental "What's for Dinner," Pages is an album that offers a little something for everybody.

I was actually fortunate enough to be in Italy while Eros was on tour. I was able to attend one of his concerts in Catanzaro, Calabria. The concert was PHENOMENAL!!! I never wanted it to end. When i purchased this DVD, it made me feel like i was right there again, only closer. Eros is an amazing musician and an excellent performer! If you don't understand Italian, I would recommend trying to translate his lyrics online, because his concert is incredible, but it's just that much better if you are able to understand the story behind his magic, especially the songs he sings to his daughter Aurora. Ti Amo EROS!

Rhythms Del Mundo is an electrifying album that fuses music of different cultures and comes up with a melting pot of rare sounds. While the majority of the original artists' vocals remain the same, The Buena Vista Social Club musicians took the original orchestration from each song and created something utterly unique, casting their trademark mastery over each track. Their noted and exceptional musicianship seduced even the notoriously protective Arctic Monkeys into handing over their track. As well as The Arctic Monkeys' track `Dancing Shoes', Rhythms Del Mundo included reworked tracks such as `Clocks' by Coldplay, `Better Together' by Jack Johnson, `She Will be Loved' by Maroon 5, `High and Dry by Radiohead' and others. The album is in aid of Artists Project Earth (APE), which lends support for natural disaster relief and climate change awareness.

Jessica Simpson - Do You Know (2008)
    EAC-Rip | FLAC-image +cue +log +Scans | September 9, 2008 | ~294 MB
Genre: Pop, Country | Label: Sony | Fserve, Fsonic

With 2008's Do You Know, singer/actress Jessica Simpson wanders from her comfortable pop confines into country territory for a set of twangy crossover tunes. Born and raised in Texas, Simpson certainly has more built-in country cred than many performers, and she uses it to offer up an appealing album proudly in the Shania Twain/Faith Hill vein. Although many of these songs feature pedal-steel guitar, fiddle, and other telltale country instrumentation (see the lively opener, "Come On Over"), Simpson never pretends that these tracks are anything but Nashville-honed pop numbers. Simpson also uses Do You Know as way to return to her Christian-music roots, as most readily embodied by the celebratory "Pray Out Loud." The record's crowning moment, however, is easily the title track, both written by and featuring the legendary Dolly Parton, who helps to cap off Do You Know with an extra dose of energy and passion.

The Charlie Daniels Band - Land That I Love (2010)
    EAC-Rip | APE-image +cue +log +Scans | August 10, 2010 | ~393 MB
Genre: Country | Label: Blue Hat | Fserve, Fsonic

Rounding up patriotic cuts, the Charlie Daniels Band has recorded for Blue Hat over the past decade or so – mainly re-recordings of standards or older CDB hits, such as "Simple Man" and "Still in Saigon," although it also has the rabble-rousing "This Ain't No Rag, It's a Flag" from the early days of the Iraq war, all culled from his 2003 album Freedom and Justice for All – The Land That I Love also adds the brand-new, self-explanatory "Iraq Blues," along with a remake of "(What the World Needs Is) A Few More Rednecks" for good measure. This may not be a great enticement for the fan who already owns everything featured here, but it surely adds a bit of modern patriotic fervor to a collection designed for the reddest of the red states. The remakes aren't as good as the originals – and the recitations are quite heavy-handed – but The Land That I Love delivers what it promises, no more and no less.

    Johannes Linstead - Mediterranea (2004)
    EAC-Rip | FLAC-tracks +cue +log +Booklet/Scans | September 14, 2004 | 564 MB
Genre: Flamenco, Instrumental, New Age | Label: Earthscape Media | Fserve, Fsonic

The notion of flamenco music approached in a polite, genteel manner may sound inherently contradictory to some, but Canadian-born guitarist Johannes Linstead accomplishes the task with admirable grace and poise. As with his four previous recordings, Linstead's Mediterranea is short on the fire, sweat, and florid technique found in the work of Jesse Cook and other nouveau flamenco contemporaries. Instead, Linstead leans more on heart, melodicism, and adroit fingering to craft a lively yet dignified sound that, while perhaps tame to some ears, elevates his instrumentals beyond simple easy-listening fare. Linstead (Spanish guitar, bouzouki, keyboards) is an accomplished player (for evidence, consider his energized licks on "Sangre del Toro") whose arrangements create a colorful, accessible sound well-suited to listeners with a taste for what could be termed "smooth flamenco."
