The singing of the Chœur du Cantre Catholique Chinois de Paris is beautiful and the handling of traditional Chinese instruments very tasteful and idiomatic. As an experience at the most basic level, Mass of the Jesuits in Beijing is a remarkable thing, as Chinese singing and instruments collide with Baroque trio sonatas and d'Ambleville's deliberately arcane Latin mass movements.

There is certainly nothing mechanical about the present performances, of three works which in emotional content range from the joyful vitality of the Advent cantata BWV36 to the meditations upon death and the leave-taking of this world which permeate BWV27. As always the opening choruses are of particular interest, for instance that of Cantata BWV47, a striking example of Bach’s skills in illustrating a text in music but also a highly complex composition in which the interplay between choir and orchestra is beautifully balanced. The soloists also have their share of fine moments on this instalment. Hana Blažíková, dubbed ‘an ideal Bach soprano’ in International Record Review on account of her performance on the previous Cantata volume, performs the charming and playful aria ‘Auch mit gedämpften, schwachen Stimmen’ with solo violin, while Robin Blaze and Peter Kooij – both veterans of this series – each have received a true display piece in the form of the two arias of BWV27.

Porcupine Tree is unquestionably one of the most difficult-to-categorize and innovative bands working today. The music is breathtaking, ranging from psychedelic trip-hop to progressive metal, and a compendium of other sounds and genres in between.

The Rockin' Johnny Band's latest independent release "More Real Folk Blues" was recorded live at Chicago's intimate club B.L.U.E.S. on Halsted. This CD features Rockin' Johnny's trademark incisive, true-Chicago style guitar playing that marked his first two releases on the Delmark label. This band shines in front of a crowd and you can feel the excitement when you listen to this recording. Also featured as a special guest is Howlin Wolf's longtime saxman/bandleader Eddie Shaw. This CD is a blues guitar lovers dream with songs in the style of Earl Hooker, Magic Sam, Hip Linkchain, and Jimmy Dawkins.

This is one of the best fusion albums ever done, the blending of jazz and carnatic in this one is simply superb and is a pioneering work with some of the top names in the field. It kind of gave a framework for a different feel and structure to fusion pieces (others like shakti were also excellent but a different flavour) The pieces have a good carnatic raga scale and superimposed jazz rythms over classical talas (beat cycles). But the best blend of the jazz/carnatic rythms were done in spanish wave, which is earlier than this album. Both the violinists are brilliant and in the paganini caprice piece, its almost impossible to find any trace of india classical style in the violin playing although dr. subramaniam had played it. Harvie has always sought new sounds and directions for his music. After deep study of Afro-Cuban and Latin genres, including trips to Cuba and sessions with local masters, he formed Eye Contact.
