Freddie Hubbard's definitely rolling on this great little set – rolling right back into acoustic jazz territory after a run of smoother soul sessions for bigger labels at the end of the 70s! The album's a live one, and it's a perfect example of the development of Hubbard's solo skills at the point – amazingly well-crafted, especially in a spontaneous setting like this, where Freddie can really stretch out over a long tune with really soulfully imaginative expressions. The group features the great David Schnitter on tenor and soprano sax – a great colleague for the date – plus Billy Childs on acoustic and electric piano, Larry Klein on bass, and Carl Burnett on drums. Titles include "Breaking Point", "Brigitte", "Cascais", "One Of Another Kind", and "Byrdlike".

The disc contains scenes from some Offenbach operettas such as La belle Hélène, La Grande-Duchesse de Gérolstein, and La Périchole as well as some of his lesser known works. While most of the music showcases Ms. Von Otter's talent, she is also accompanied by other soloists and a chorus, all of whom perform exceptionally well. Listeners are not only exposed to lesser known works of this composer, but also to the composer's many talents. When we listen to this music, it is not too much of a stretch to see how he could create the masterpiece of TALES OF HOFFMAN (yes, the barcarolle is included).

With source material like this, how can you go wrong? Like Nick Drake, Tim Buckley had a body of work that survived not only the ignominy of commercial oversight but also his own untimely death to live on in the imagination and influence of a new generation of artists and music lovers. The fruit of that influence is realized on Sing a Song For You, a two-CD collection of Buckley covers from a wide range of contemporary artists. The holy trinity of Tim Buckley's appeal were his amazing voice, which could swoop its way through multiple octaves; his lyrical strength and formidable songwriting skills; and his incessant experimentation with new forums and formats for his musical vision. Though Sing a Song For You lacks the first of these, it has the last two in mighty doses. Many of the tracks on these two CDs rely on the power of the original songs; others grasp Buckley's improvisatory spirit and recast them in new and startling light. Brendan Perry's (Dead Can Dance) version of "Dream Letter" is sparse and interpretive, riding on Perry's haunting voice. Mike Johnson's "I Woke Up" drops the original's light jazz breeze for a loose and dark arrangement. The Lilys amp up "Strange Feelin'" with a joyful, crazed-rock vibe. Though Sing a Song for You will be of great interest to fans.

It features original Dan Hicks Christmas tunes, some classic favorites, and a few tunes re-worked for Christmas. He sets these lyrical gems to quirky tunes that trade on a bagful of jazz chords and an irresistible rhythm. This music gets under your skin, and the lyrics are set loose upon your unsuspecting brain. St. Nick is in for one hell of a good time.

Ernest Tubb & The Texas Troubadors, Bob Wills & The Texas Playboys, Willie Nelson & The Family Band, George Strait and the Ace In The Hole Band, have all played regular shows at the legendary dance hall, the Broken Spoke in Austin , TX, which is what Jesse Dayton has been doing for years. Leading his band every Thursday night and keeping the dance floor full. Such was the inspiration for Jesse's latest release, "One For The Dance Halls." "One For The Dance Halls" was also inspired by a core group of Austin dancers, who Jesse aptly named the "Solid Chrome Dancers." He had never made a straight ahead top-to-bottom country record that consisted only of shuffles, straight 8's, ballads and waltzes. He says, "I knew if I could come up with some new material that they loved, I'd be on my way to making a legendary country record that might stand the test of time." Having shared the studio with Waylon Jennings, Ray Price, Willie Nelson and Johnny Bush, Jesse needed no more inspiration than the incredible tunes these dance hall giants had brought before him.

Few concert runs (read: several shows in the same venue) are as highly lauded by Grateful Dead enthusiasts as February 27 through March 2, 1969, at the Fillmore West in San Francisco. Although the title Fillmore West 1969: The Complete Recordings is misleading – as they played there upward of two dozen times during the year – practically every second of their eight-set, four-night stand is captured on this ten-CD box.

Hayes Carll hasn't been resting on his laurels since topping critics polls and winning awards for his 2008 album, Trouble in Mind. Instead, he's been on the road nearly nonstop with his band, "The Poor Choices" blasting through honky tonks and rock clubs across the U.S. and beyond. Along the way, he's been inspired to write a crop of new tunes that the acclaimed songwriter says are "a layman's take on our country - a snapshot of America in some small way." The result: the sharply drawn collection KMAG YOYO (& Other American Stories), his second release from Lost Highway. KMAG YOYO is pronounced "kay-mag, yo-yo."

RA found Utopia moving away from the long, experimental instrumental jams that distinguished their first two albums, but what's surprising about it is how the group changed. Sure, the lineup was different but their approach changed on RA, as they moved away from prog rock and toward hard rock. In that regard, it makes sense that Rundgren's possessive has been stripped from Utopia's name, since the band no longer sounds like an indulgent spin-off of his own albums.

The great Greek composer Stavros Xarhakos at his best moments. Brilliant instrumental greek music by 2 bouzouki masters backed by orchestra conducted by the composer. 'Monastiraki' is an historical place at the center of Athens, under Acropolis and "Tetragono" means 'square' or 'district' in greek. The album starts with a happy dancing mood and you can enjoy some wonderful 'syrtaki', 'zeibekiko', 'hassapiko' and other greek popular dances. At the last pieces the mood changes and becomes melancholic inplying the difficulties and insecurity of everyday city life.

More than any other improvising artist during the past 45 years, the pianist/composer/bandleader Dave Brubeck (b. 1920) has expanded the rhythmic boundaries of Jazz, while creating a body of work that is notable for its consistent levels of melodic content and harmonic invention. Recorded between 1959 and 1965, this five-disc set captures the Brubeck quartet, featuring the floating alto saxophone of Paul Desmond (composer of the million-selling "Take Five"), at the peak of their powers.
