DUSK AND HER EMBRACE, Cradle of Filth's third release (and first domestically available title), was a shock to the metal system when it was released in 1996. Arguably the British sextet's best produced album, DUSK is a fright-fest, from Dani Filth's unearthly, high-pitched vocalizations to the ferocious, flash-of-the-blade, orchestrated time changes. With production duties handled by the ever-capable Kit Woolven (Thin Lizzy, Anathema, Cathedral), the band nimbly blurs the line between black metal and death metal, all with an ambient twist. Featuring a guest vocal performance by Venom frontmanCronos, DUSK is a benchmark release in the band's hyper-creative career.
2010 album from the R&B/Pop sensations, one of the biggest boybands of a generation. Working with a roll call of international production talent–whose collective CVs include the likes of Rihanna, Ne-Yo, and the Black Eyed Peas–Aston, Marvin, Orits‚ and JB have crafted 14 killer tracks ranging from heart-pumping techno-laced stompers to tender acoustic balladry. Co-writing the majority of the tracks, the guys display the full range of their talents from the smooth close harmonies of "Other Side Of The World" (with the lads sharing love-struck lead vocals) to kinetic future pop like the take-no-prisoners floor filler "Superhero".
Planxty, curiously no official live recordings until 2004, at that memorable concert turned into a DVD.
Before the hits really starting coming, Slade showed why they were one of England's best live acts with this fevered concert recording from 1972. Set alight by plenty of stomping beats, lumbering bass, fat guitars, and Noddy Holder's hoarse vocal scream, Slade Alive! finds the lads from Wolverhampton goading on their rabid fans at every juncture ("Wan ya ta really let loose on iss one")…
VOICES was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album.Guitarist-composer Mike Stern presents a mixed bag of musical ideas on this on VOICES, blending the ethnically diverse singing styles of Richard Bona, Elizabeth Kontomanou, and Philip Hamilton with rock grooves, bop guitar licks, and layers of keyboards. Even though Stern dips his pen into many musical colors, VOICES comes across as a solid, unified effort.
Cheap Thrills is designed for the curious listener who has always wanted to explore Frank Zappa but was intimidated by his overwhelming catalog. Of course, so is Strictly Commercial, which contains all of Zappa's most familiar songs, but Cheap Thrills has the advantage of being cheap, plus giving an idea of the weird diversity of Zappa's catalog, since it's filled with cult favorites, live tracks, smutty jokes, and assorted album tracks. It's not necessarily the most accessible introduction to Zappa – again, that would be Strictly Commercial – but it's more accessible than the average album while giving a sense of what the albums feel like.
Glen Moore is one of the most virtuoso bassists in jazz, though his interest in music is open to influences from around the world. These mid-'90s sessions mix duets with oud player Rabih Abou-Khali and a quartet with Carla Bley (on organ), electric bassist Steve Swallow, and percussionist Arto Tuncboyaciayn. […] Throughout the sessions, Moore seems to squeeze every possibility out of his centuries-old instrument, incorporating squeals and percussive effects, in addition to his superb technique whether playing arco or pizzicato. Nude Bass Ascending will definitely appeal to jazz listeners with a sense of adventure. ~Ken Dryden, All Music Guide
