    Folk Rock/Metal

The folk rockers are back with their imaginative timbres and stories in the form of their brand new album Traumtänzer. However, the listener is only mislead for a few seconds – then the music really takes off! A good portion of energy vokes memories of the lively punk era. The flute vies with the drums for speed, Anna flies across the strings of her violin in a virtuoso manner, the electric guitar produces a sweeping solo and Thomas’ text dreams of happiness. In a word: "SCHANDMAUL are back!

Whiplash delivers probably one of their most diverse and mature album to date with Unborn Again. Cleverly blending the traditional elements of Hard Rock and a slight pinch of Blues necessity, Unborn Again is a testament of pure passion, rebellion and most certainly an unrivalled collection of powerfully inspiring Thrash Metal attitude. Another sparkling gem in Leszek Mozdzer’s rich catalogue, Between Us and the Light (which, as far as I know, despite its English title has been published only in Poland) sees the Polish piano genius in a jazz trio context, alongside Swedish bassist and cellist Lars Danielsson and Israeli percussionist Zohar Fresco. Like the previous album of this exciting trio (2005’s The Time), Between Us and the Light has garnered double platinum award in Poland. It’s not difficult to understand why. Highly recommended. Hold Your Fire is the 12th studio album by the Canadian rock band Rush, released in the fall of 1987 and stalled at #13 (the first time a Rush studio album failed to reach the Top 10 since 1978's Hemispheres) and sold a million copies according to the band's then-label Mercury Records. However, the American RIAA has the album listed at Gold. In terms of songwriting, Rush continued to explore new territory.

Natalie Clein, cello; Julius Drake, piano

Epic, forceful and a real technical challenge, Kodály’s 1915 sonata for solo cello dominates this uplifting recital. Magically deft, soaringly passionate, without any trace of self-indulgence, Clein conjures a full orchestra of colours and textures from her precious Guadagnini cello. Gentler moods prevail in Kodaly’s little-known Epigrams and other minor delights. Julius Drake’s piano accompaniments are expectedly delicate and caring. Hyperion’s warm recording is another joy.

Eric Burdon's second and final album with War, Black-Man's Burdon was a double set that could have benefited from quite a bit of judicious editing. Composed mostly of sprawling psychedelic funk jams, it does find War mapping out much of the jazz/Latin/soul grooves that, cut down to much more economical song structures, would shortly bring them success on their own. Highlights include the soulful vamps "Pretty Colors" and "They Can't Take Away Our Music"; the 13-minute "Paint It Black" medley reflects the height of their eccentricity, and not one, but two covers of "Nights in White Satin" are absurd low points.

Simone Kermes, crowned 'The Queen of Baroque' by Opera News, presents her eagerly awaited new album. Colori d'Amore (The Colours Of Love) is a selection of virtuosic baroque arias bound together by the theme of love, almost all of which are world premiere recordings, having been unjustly neglected for centuries.

Drummer Jim Payne performs bluesy material with his traditional yet forward-looking organ trio. Guitarist John Scofield sits in on the blues "Jabo" and Mike Clark plays second drums on two numbers, but otherwise the music is interpreted by the trio of organist Jerry Z, guitarist Bill Bickford (who sometimes hints a bit at Scofield), and Payne. It is danceable, grooving, funky, R&B-ish, and full of the blues without being overly predictable. While Energie can be played in the background at parties, it rewards close listenings too, for it is quite fun. The three core musicians clearly enjoy playing off each other, to the benefit of listeners.
