The repertoire in this recording features two innovative jewish composers - Erwin Schulhoff and Arnold Schoenberg - who persued widely differing musical styles - and who met very different fates. The three pieces performed here were completed by August 1924 and March 1927. They are not particularly Jewish in style, but are rather more reflective of the era in which they were written. Smith and Hodkinson here perform Schulhoff’s Flute Sonata and Concertino. The instrumentation of the Concertino is unique: flute doubling piccolo, viola and contrabass and the result is a fine rustic work, described by Schulhoff as "Moravian seller of shepherds’ flutes in the streets of Prague."These two rarely performed works are coupled with the rarely recorded transcription of Schoenberg’s Sonata for Wind Quintet, Op 26 by Felix Greissle. The Quintet was Schoenberg’s first strict twelve-tone composition. Fenwick Smith corresonded with Greissle when preparing the Sonata for performance and recording.

When CHICK COREA watched BERNARD BUNNY BRUNEL play one night at an upscale London jazz club in 1978, Bunny was unaware of the ultimate significance Corea would play in his future success as a bassist. A few weeks after that visit to London, Chick called Bunny on the telephone and asked him to pack up and join him on a world wide tour. Bunny quickly accepted and went on to record the classics "Tap Step" and "Secret Agent" with the legendary jazz fusionist.

You and Me Both is the second, and final, album released by British synthpop duo Yazoo in 1983. As was their debut, the record was produced by Yazoo members Vince Clarke and Alison Moyet along with E.C. Radcliffe. Upon its release You and Me Both received positive reviews from music critics who noted that the album showed strong progression in songwriting and production from both Moyet and Clarke from their debut. The album peaked at #1 in the UK and #69 in the US.

Together with his friend Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil ushered in the late-60s tropicalismo style, which blended a variety of regional genres to form a musical challenge to Brazil's then-oppressive regime. Gil's own songs are perfectly attuned to his light, high timbre; his favourite accompaniment is a delicately-strummed acoustic guitar, which often descends to a confidential whisper. If he uses a backing group, he does so very discreetly; a light touch of Latin percussion is quite sufficient to allow him to float his songs into the ether. This exhilarating album begins with his early song about his home patch in Salvador "Toda Menina Baiana", and moves on through a gamut of national styles and moods.
