This new release on Lara St. John’s Ancalagon label pairs the gifted violinist with her equally talented brother in Mozart concertos, individually and together. In Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante, Scott St. John tackles the viola part, using the scordatura tuning – up a semitone from D major – that Mozart specifies in the score to give greater presence to the instrument. Conductor Eric Jacobsen sets a stylish introduction with the New York-based chamber orchestra, The Knights, though some may find the orchestral image a bit weighty for this repertoire.

Os Afro-Sambas was originally recorded in 1966, while this one without Vinicius de Moraes, was done by Baden Powell, Quarteto em cy (as the original), and others nearly quarter century later. Os Afro-Sambas is certainly one of the most important works of contemporary Brazilian Music truly reflecting the transition period from the stylish Bossa Nova of the late 50's to the revolutionary Tropicalia of the late 60's. Eight of the eleven compositions are the same of the original one, while two are also compostions of Baden and Vinicius from the same period and the opening was made by Baden alone specially for this recording.

David Bowie has never been shy about acknowledging his influences, and since the boho decadence and sexual ambiguity of the Velvet Underground's music had a major impact on Bowie's work, it was only fitting that as Ziggy Stardust mania was reaching its peak, Bowie would offer Lou Reed some much needed help with his career, which was stuck in neutral after his first solo album came and went. Musically, Reed's work didn't have too much in common with the sonic bombast of the glam scene, but at least it was a place where his eccentricities could find a comfortable home, and on Transformer Bowie and his right-hand man, Mick Ronson, crafted a new sound for Reed that was better fitting (and more commercially astute) than the ambivalent tone of his first solo album.

Transformer and "Walk on the Wild Side" were both major hits in 1972, to the surprise of both Lou Reed and the music industry, and with Reed suddenly a hot commodity, he used his newly won clout to make the most ambitious album of his career, Berlin. Berlin was the musical equivalent of a drug-addled kid set loose in a candy store; the album's songs, which form a loose story line about a doomed romance between two chemically fueled bohemians, were fleshed out with a huge, boomy production (Bob Ezrin at his most grandiose) and arrangements overloaded with guitars, keyboards, horns, strings, and any other kitchen sink that was handy

Dmitri Shostakovich remains the most admired of all Soviet composers, and while he is best known for his more popular symphonic works, he composed a substantial body of music for the piano, including the 24 Preludes and Fugues, Op.87. Modeled on the form used in Bach's Das Wohltempierte Clavier and written in two books of twelve preludes and fugues each, the work was slammed by Soviet music bureaucrats as "formalist" music that aped the works of a religious composer; the work was nevertheless published and premiered by Tatiana Nikolayeva, to whom the work is dedicated. It can be said, with advised caution, that Jenny Lin's approach topples the hegemony of Nikolayeva's recordings. Lin has no compunctions about drawing the modernism, quirkiness, individuality and pianistic color in these works – and nevertheless projects each prelude-and-fugue pairing as a satisfying whole.

The Rascals, along with the Righteous Brothers, Mitch Ryder, and precious few others, were the pinnacle of '60s blue-eyed soul. The Rascals' talents, however, would have to rate above their rivals, if for nothing else than the simple fact that they, unlike many other blue-eyed soulsters, penned much of their own material.
