The "Caffe' Espresso - Made In Italy" project by the Italian guitarist Marco Vienna is a very original acoustic jazz CD. An instrumental rendition of 12 beatiful Italian songs (from the repertoire of Bruno Martino, Gorni Kramer, Fabio Concato, Ennio Morricone, Piero Umiliani and others) loosely played in the style of Django Reinhardt and the Hot Club De France, but with a more modern and "Mediterranean" mood.

This song, recorded in a living room features David Grisman on mandolin, Frank Vignola and Robin Nolan on guitars, and Michael Papillo on bass. The instruments used on this particular recording are interesting as well. Grisman uses a Giacomel J5 mandolin made in Italy. The archtop guitar played by Vignola is a Thorell Legato. Nolan plays a nylon stringed Dell'Arte DG-RN1, the Robin Nolin model, which is built in the tradition of Jacques Favino.

The title of this compilation tries to make Montgomery viable for a younger generation, but it's not exactly "acid jazz." Rather, it's an anthology of some of Montgomery's better pop- and soul-oriented material from the mid-'60s. The 16 tracks show Montgomery in both orchestral and small combo settings, a few cuts taken from his collaborations with Jimmy Smith. Purists have long disdained this phase of Montgomery's career. But those who don't measure work by how straight-ahead it is will find much to enjoy here, in either the cuts with Oliver Nelson's orchestra, or the less elaborate sessions with the likes of Smith, Grady Tate, Ron Carter, and Ray Barretto.

Label: Tokyo Dawn | Genre: Soul, Funk, Disco

Spotlight on for the long awaited debut album by Tokyo Dawn's first lady Amalia! 'Art Slave' is a colorful manifesto for the passion of art, the strength of heart and the need for funk in all stages of life.
This time, Amalia bravely commands her own starship and pays homage to the strong women of soul who catalyzed her ingenuity such as Chaka Khan, Sheila E, Eartha Kitt and Betty Davis. Produced by the Swedish funk extraordinaire Opolopo, 'Art Slave' is sonically and musically influenced by late 80s/early 90s New Jack Swing and Boogie, but definitely sets its own standards. AD Bourke, Atjazz & Son Of Kick deliver the bonus remixes for this release.

There's no end of worthy targets on this Afrobeat assault. George W. Bush, pharmaceutical companies, and the just plain lazy all get a well-placed rhythmic kicking. And while it would be easy enough to bask in the long shadow of Fela Kuti, Aphrodesia drops in all manner of strange bits on the fringes. They've got Fela's full lung sing-a-long thing down but woven together with a '70s funk-soul thread reminiscent of Donny Hathaway, Lonnie Liston Smith, and Fred Wesley's Horny Horns. They also kick up dust similar to modern African artists like Tinariwen, showing this large group has their collective ear on the Serengeti's contemporary developments. So many politically charged bands end up teetering off their soapbox pretty quickly (I'm looking at you Spearhead). Not so with Aphrodesia, who jangle our bones and let the ideas seep into the bloodstream through active transport.

Somewhere between National Health, Soft Machine, Henry Cow, and the original Mothers Of Invention lies the sound of this album by The Muffins. The music is primarily played by four core multi-instrumentalists: Billy Swan, Paul Sears, Tom Scott and Dave Newhouse (of course it helps to let Wayside Music/Cuneiform Records owner Steve Feigenbaum play on the album). The result is a wonderful journey through sometimes improvised, sometimes tightly written, jazzy rock music…

This is, according to most, the best album by Seru Giran. While I consider the bands first three albums all to be masterpieces, I think its here that the band managed to really coalesce into a single unit. The first album, was mostly led by maestro Charly García and has a more classical music feel to it. The second album saw the band consolidate itself but producing more mainstream rock oriented tracks. On the other hand, Bicicleta saw the band producing a rather proggy album with amazing things to hear. This is mainly evidenced by the whole array of genres that find their way here: rock&roll, jazz, tango, new wave…..
