He Xuntian is one of China's true musical individualists. Slightly older than the famous "Class of '78" He began his musical career composing for the Chongqing Propaganda Troupe. Following the Cultural Revolution, He studied at the Sichuan Conservatory under Gao Weijie (whose other student's included the Chinese Avant Garde guzheng player, Wu Fei). Under Gao's teaching, He developed his own unique compositional voice, embracing both the extremes of modernism and experimentalism as well as a passionate devotion to China's unique musical traditions. "Four Dreams for Electric Erhu and Orchestra" is an outstanding example of He's extraordinary approach to music as sound and texture, and utilizes a compositional strategy of his own creation.
