Among American audiences, Manu Dibango is best known for "Soul Makossa," a highly infectious blend of African music, soul-funk, and jazz that became a major pop hit in the early '70s. The African artist revisited his signature tune on 1994's Wakafrika, which boasts an all-star cast that includes Peter Gabriel as well as Haiti's Papa Wemba and African heroes Ladysmith Black Mambazo, King Sunny Ade, and Youssou N'Dour. With such a stellar bunch of guests, Wakafrika should have been outstanding instead of simply decent.

Los Gusanos may sound like the name of a Latin group, but it's actually the New York-based foursome that C.J. of the Ramones fame founded when he was still with the pioneering Queens punk outfit in 1992. Ward had joined The Ramones in 1989, when he replaced founding member and bassist Dee Dee Ramone. Ward started Los Gusanos as a side project three years later, and at first, he had no idea that his band would evolve into his main gig. Not very Ramones-sounding, Los Gusanos isn't actually a punk band but does have a punk-influenced energy and attitude. While Ward was strictly a bassist in The Ramones, Los Gusanos has found him singing lead and playing rhythm guitar.

Stephen Albert is counted as one of the most accomplished pioneers of ‘The New Romanticism’: a generation of composers seeking to reclaim some of the emotional expression lost through the rigors of intellectual Modernism in music. Inspired by James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake, TreeStone is a moving exploration of the tragic legend of Tristan and Iseult. In Concordiam reveals the range and complexity of Albert’s style in uniting angular dissonance with mellifluous harmonies. Albert worked closely with the Seattle Symphony on this work, revising it during his three year tenure as composer-in-residence.

James MacMillan has produced a spate of works in various genres – symphonic, concerto, opera, theater, sacred, choral, and much else. He has achieved great success with a number of them, placing him easily among the leading Scottish composers from the late twentieth and early twenty first centuries. 1990 was a watershed time for MacMillan: that year his theatrical piece Búsqueda (1988) was introduced at the Edinburgh International Festival, and his orchestral work The Confession of Isobel Gowdie was premiered at a Proms concert, both events catapulting him to national as well as international notice. The latter opus and his percussion concerto Veni, Veni, Emmanuel are probably MacMillan's most popular large works. MacMillan's style incorporates some modernist characteristics (leftovers from his youth), but on the whole his music, with its use of Scottish folk music; his quite ……

Fourteenth studio album by the work of Paco de Lucia. He joined in it for the first time a group of five musicians, called Paco de Lucia Sextet, which integrated the elements of an array of jazz to flamenco guitar. Jorge Pardo, Ruben Dantas and Carlos Benavent, in addition to second guitar of his brother Ramon de Algeciras and Pepe de Lucía's voice. Paco de Lucia with his sextet began on this record a new aesthetic that established a definite highlight for all the flamenco coming from that time.

The take-no-prisoners approach of the opening track seems to convey only one message: make no mistake, the jazz Piano trio is still Alive and… kicking ass. The song, the exuberant Latin Cherish your Sunshine, is characterized by a mercurial melody that slithers, full of catch-me-if-you-can bravura, along the bar-lines. When, in the ‘tutti’, the theme is finally caught by the expertly chasing rhythm section, the listener cannot feel anything but joy. It’s the same joy that the Michiel Borstlap Trio - Boudewijn Lucas: electric bass, Erik Kooger: Drums - experienced whilst recording the album.

Naive Classique welcomes newcomers to the Vivaldi Edition: renowned violinist Riccardo Minasi and a new baroque orchestra, Il Pomo d'Oro. "L'Imperatore" is the 46th title in the Vivaldi Edition and the 4th volume, out of approximately 12, of the series dedicated to the violin concertos whose manuscripts are held in the National Library of Turin. All the concertos selected here have been composed for, dedicated to or performed in front of Charles VI (1685-1740), sovereign of the Habsburg Empire, renowned as a patron and passionate lover of music. This series of 7 concertos is an overview of the complete art of Vivaldi as a composer and violinist: large scale of music, invention, expression, energy, power of evocation, considerable virtuosity. Riccardo Minasi is a leading Italian baroque violinist and is also an established conductor.

After the departure of co-lead vocalist Mike Harrison, it seemed that the already-declining Spooky Tooth had suffered a creative deathblow. Fortunately, replacement Mike Patto brought new life to the aging rock outfit on The Mirror. The accomplishments of this, the group's final offering, pales in comparison to their masterpiece, Spooky Two, but there are still some fine moments. A careful examination of the credits might explain the cool musicality of the 1974 Island release.

The Jon Amor Blues Group is technically Jon Amor’s solo band under a different name and a wholly new flavour. Doherty brothers Chris (bass) and Dave (guitar) plus drummer Simon Small, all originally loaned from local Wiltshire outfit Hitchmo, have backed Amor for a number of years now for recording and touring his varied solo outtings prior to this switch back to blues. That said, there’s not really that much blues to be had on their self-titled debut. Most of the songs, to varying degrees of success, focus on raw riffs and the kind of energy very obviously captured by recording live in a room together, than they do on the traditional motifs of the blues.

Although the surprisingly intense Unexplained EP gave EMF's fans some clue as to the direction the band was going to take with its next album, Stigma still took many by surprise. A claustrophobic record filled with heavy walls of guitars, effects, and dark keyboards, Stigma is about as far away as possible from the sunny dance-pop of Schubert Dip. While that album hid some darker lyrical concerns under its bubbly pop surface, Stigma is almost entirely concerned with feelings of alienation from fame, love, and friendship. …
