    Genre: Smooth Jazz

The follow-up to 2009's Good Day, Peter White's 13th studio effort, 2012's Here We Go, features more of the adept smooth jazz guitarist's lyrical and lightly funky cuts. Sticking primarily to his acoustic nylon-string guitar, White mixes in keyboards, various percussion instruments, saxes, and horns to create various moods throughout with the primary vibe being one of relaxed joy. To these ends, we get the steamy R&B-infused cut "Time Never Sleeps," the languid instrumental pop of "Our Dance," and the club-ready dance number "Joyride." Adding to the sophisticated aura of the album are guest appearances by such artists as David Sanborn, Andrew Neu, and Kirk Whalum.

Three years after the release of the CD New Discoveries, which enriched the Vivaldi Edition with an initial selection of miraculously recovered gems, the harvest is again abundant enough to nourish a second volume of Vivaldian revelations. And we may marvel anew at these jewels that have escaped from their long oblivion and have been unearthed for us all over Europe.

Guitars as jet engines; guitars as haunted electronics; guitars as filling-melting white heat: A Place To Bury Strangers' 2012 album Worship is explosive, visceral, and dark. APTBS' DIY-braintrust of Death By Audio wizard Oliver Ackerman and bassist Dion Lunadon continue the evolution of songwriting that began with Onwards to the Wall, the band's 2011 EP. Now on Worship, they interweave threads of krautrock, dream-pop, and 80s goth without ever losing the edge that is quintessentially Strangers. Unhinged dissonance is artfully framed within a fiercely dynamic and assured melodic sensibility.

    Black Metal

Dux, in fact, is the project band of Orthanc’s members. They come from the French underground, they were formed in 2007 and they have released a demo and the full length album “Vintras”. This album was released some time ago (March 2012) and it contains eight compositions of forty five minutes of duration. Musically, Dux hardly reminds of Orthanc, more in the fast parts and in the depressive atmosphere that is created by some passages. Generally their music is more oriented to the traditional, harsh and raw Black Metal sound. But what draws the attention and makes this project more interesting is the combination of that kind of sound with several traditional Heavy Metal touches.

Albert Collins was one of Jimi Hendrix' idols and has since been asked to collaborate in the studio with John Lee Hooker and Gary Moore. On stage, the Texan delighted his audiences with his famed guitar walks.

"After experiencing my first bullfight in Tijuana, Mexico," Alpert recalls, "I was inspired to find a way to musically express what I felt while watching the wild responses of the crowd, and hearing the brass musicians introducing each new event with rousing fanfare."

When Kenny Wheeler expatriated from his native Canada to England, it was not headline news. But upon the release of Gnu High, he became a contemporary jazz figure to be recognized, revered and admired. Playing the flugelhorn exclusively for this, his ECM label debut, Wheeler's mellifluous tones and wealth of ideas came to full fruition. Whether chosen in collaboration with label boss Manfred Eicher or by Wheeler alone, picking pianist Keith Jarrett, bassist Dave Holland and drummer Jack DeJohnette was a stroke of genius. They support the elongated and extended notions of Wheeler's in many real and important ways.

Iceman: The Mercury Years compiles 44 tracks from the talented Butler's mostly successful 1965-1974 stint at the label. Despite his hits and classics with the label, he didn't start off with gangbusters there. He did steady himself somewhat with "I Dig You Baby" and "Mr. Dream Merchant." Just as his fortunes seemed to be drifting downward, Butler rebounded by 1967. Iceman: The Mercury Years makes no bones about its unabashed emphasis on Butler's work with Kenny Gamble, Leon Huff, and Thom Bell. Not surprisingly, the tracks included prove the point. The big hits – including "Only the Strong Survive," "Hey, Western Union Man," and "A Brand New Me" – lose nothing in a greatest-hits format.

One of the few bass trumpet specialists in jazz history, Cy Touff (1927-2003) was a fixture in Chicago for decades. Touff recorded albums for Pacific Jazz and Chess' Argo in the '50s. He worked in the studios, performed in clubs and recorded with Chubby Jackson and Lorez Alexandria in 1957, and with the group Hyde Park After Dark in 1981. Tenor saxophonist Sandy Mosse (1929-1983) was born in Detroit but spent much of his American playing time in Chicago. He moved to Paris at age 22 and recorded historical sides in the bands of Henri Renaud and Django Rheinhardt. He returned to Chicago in '55 and recorded for Argo. Touff and Mosse co-led an octet in the late '50s/early '60s called Pieces of Eight. Mosse relocated to Amsterdam in the late '70s where he spent his last years. Tickle Toe is a swinging 1981 date with John Campbell, Kelly Sill and Jerry Coleman.
