Tal Farlow was hitting his stride in 1956; he was named by Down Beat magazine critics as the very best jazz guitarist in the world, and for all the right reasons. Where other similar players of his day combined rhythmic chords with linear melodies, Farlow preferred placing single notes together in clusters, varying between harmonically richened tones based on a startling new technique. His spider-like fingers handled the guitar in a way no other player could match, and this physical approach set Farlow apart from all others. The evidence is clearly heard on this trio recording sans drummer, ably helped by the wonderful pianist Eddie Costa and bassist Vinnie Burke…
Down With It! is an album by American trumpeter Blue Mitchell, recorded in 1965 and released on the Blue Note label. The Allmusic review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine awarded the album 4 stars and stated "the record is so relaxed that it fails to generate much spark, but each the soloists have fine moments that makes the session worthwhile for jazz purists".
Soul the music of generations in America and the United Kingdom, embodying rhythm & blues with a smoothness that drove the music industry. Artists such as Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, Phyllis Hyman and Anita Baker were original (or organic) soul artists. Now soul or neo soul has made a comeback in the U.S. and U.K. due largely to the popularity of artists such as Eryka Badu,
India Aire, Jill Scott and Angie Stone. Gwendolyn Joy describes her sound as urban adult contemporary with jazzy undertones. Tired of the rap music devoid of character and morals, she writes
songs from a positive consciousness. Family centred Gwendolyn makes Detroit her home because as she puts it, this is where my spiritual and musical family reside.
2015, six years after the last studio record, Thunder is back again and they have a new CD ready to be shipped. “Wonder days” is the name of the disc that is released by earMUSIC. Important to know is that the core of the band is still part of the line-up. Danny Bowes (v), Luke Morley (g) Gary James (d) and Ben Matthews (key) are members from day one while Chris Childs (b) joined the band in the late 90’s.The ‘real’ ballad on the album is “Broken”. It’s a 4 minutes long and highly emotional track with a strong piano contribution. The track shows Thunder from their more silent side and proves the great sense for melodies of the band members
EMI invited Daniel Barenboim to record the complete series, with the English Chamber Orchestra, as conductor and soloist. The recordings were made at London's Abbey Road Studios between 1967 and 1974.
Alison Maria Krauss (born July 23, 1971) is an American bluegrass-country singer-songwriter and musician. She entered the music industry at an early age, winning local contests by the age of ten and recording for the first time at fourteen. She signed with Rounder Records in 1985 and released her first solo album in 1987. She was invited to join the band with which she still performs, Alison Krauss and Union Station (AKUS), and later released her first album with them as a group in 1989.
Few artist families dominated the light music scene of the 19th century in the same way as the Strauss dynasty. And even 150 years after the death of the "Waltz King" Johann Strauss senior and over 100 years after the passing of his son Johann Strauss junior, their dance compositions still pack concert halls around the world with throngs of eager spectators. In 1999, the Strauss anniversary year, the Vienna Philharmonic came up with a very special approach to honouring the musical father and son: An open-air concert in the heart of Vienna featuring works by Johann Strauss senior who, together with his son, cemented the reputation of this beautiful city on the Danube as the world capital of waltz.
It is no surprise that Sir Simon would one day tackle this most comprehensive of Bach’s compositions in view of his much applauded interpretation of the St. John Passion in 2006. The Berliner Morgenpost wrote at the time: “A performance of this musical calibre renders superfluous all questions about authenticity and historical performance practice. At the Philharmonie Sir Simon Rattle and his orchestra performed the St. John Passion […] with highly concentrated and flawless beauty devoid of any distorting indulgence.”
Anne Sofie von Otter, accompanied by Bengt Forsberg and joined by baritone Fredrik Zetterström for two duets, performs works by four Swedish composers whose works were all composed within a century of each other. These works provide a broad image of the early development of a Swedish Lied tradition and paved the way for the great generation of Swedish song composers, including Stenhammar, Peterson-Berger and Rangström.
