    Keiya (Marc Vrijens) was a Belgian composer and artist, specializing in making rhythmic, up beat music with African influences. Already at the age of 6 he got his first musical education at the music of Maastricht, followed by classes at the Lemmens Institute in Leuven. He played several instruments including piano, trumpet, horn, accordion and percussion. He successfully completed his musical studies at the Conservatory of Antwerp, where he also taught the principles of sound engineering. He was a drummer in various (pop) bands and thus came into regular contact with the studio world.

    Artistically, Spyro Gyra hit an all-time low in the mid-1990s. The use of outside arrangers and pop vocalists had proven detrimental, and the band was sounding even more formulaic than usual on banal albums like 1995's Love and Other Obsessions. More self-contained and devoid of adult contemporary singing, 20/20 is a slight improvement. Though Spyro still sounds contrived and is hardly challenging, a few of the songs are somewhat likable, including the moody "The Unwritten Letter" and the angular "Rockaway to Sunset."

    Like its seven studio predecessors, the self-produced Eight is a gripping album that can seriously alter anyone's passive attitudes towards music – so much so that the extra effort to obtain it seems ridiculous.
    Eight is a bit of a curve ball after Hopeless Causes and 1998's equally strident Strange Brotherhood, with edgy acoustics and slithering harmonica providing a confrontational temperament right from the staccato bang of the last notes of "Flying Through the Smoke." The shuffling "Someone Like Jesus" is so subdued and ominous, you can feel your heart race in worry like an intruder is in the house.

    It's impossible not to grab for comparables when it comes to Lisa Ekdahl. With this singer, everyone does. Always. Blossom Dearie is one of the names repeatedly dredged up, as though Dearie's high octaved but sultry and sophisticated sound could be compared side-by-side with Ekdahl's childish tremor. Diana Krall is another name evoked beside Ekdahl's, though this comparison is nothing short of silly. Sure: both are sinuous blondes who look devastating in slinky gowns and both have had more than a flirt with jazz, but Ekdahl sounds as much like Krall as she does Chet Baker. That is to say: not at all.
