Is it possible for a band to be both legendary and underrated? The Jazz Messengers at the Café Bohemia makes that case. Jazz fans know The Jazz Messengers is the definitive, go-to band for straight-ahead hard bop. Art Blakey was both master drummer and master talent scout—the man who co-founded and sustained the celebrated group. For all his talents as a trailblazing harp bop drummer, Blakey's probably better known for discovering and nurturing several generations of jazz in the Messengers. It's a long, impressive list. Fans may debate which incarnation of the Jazz Messengers was the best, but this 1955 ensemble is arguably both the best and the most underrated.

Guitar summits don't ascend higher than when legendary British free-jazz pioneer and longtime session ace Ray Russell meets the brilliant California avant-improv overachiever and Antarctic diver Henry Kaiser in the realm of The Celestial Squid. With more than countless session and soundtrack performances to his credit, including the early James Bond film scores, Russell is returning to his bone-rattling, noise-rocking roots for the first time since the very early 70s. You'll be shaken and stirred as Kaiser, Russell and eight super friends deliver a no-holds-barred, free-range sonic cage match.

Sandy Denny was a great singer and very appreciated until her untimely death. This album is probably her best known and has a truly timeless quality which I hope we have preserved. Dark End of the Street pipes are particularly suited to the feeling of the lyric.

The thing that is in style again, of course, is Jim Ed Brown himself, who at the age of 80 cherishes the opportunity to slip into his old-fashioned threads once again. It has been 35 years since he's last made a record and, understandably, a lot has happened since then, including a lung cancer diagnosis made not long after the recording for In Style Again was finished, but this isn't an album with mortality on its mind. Brown settles into the classic honky tonk and Nashville balladry that have been his stock in trade throughout his career, sometimes indulging in a little bit of a country corn (the soft-shoe shuffle "I Love It"), sometimes reviving old favorites ("Don't Let Me Cross Over"), but always sounding like he's having a whale of time making a new record.

Further Explorations by the Horace Silver Quintet is an album by jazz pianist Horace Silver released on the Blue Note label in 1958 featuring performances by Silver with Art Farmer, Clifford Jordan, Teddy Kotick, and Louis Hayes. The Japanese editions feature the same artwork shown here, but have blue as dominant colour instead of yellow. The Allmusic review by Steve Leggett awarded the album 4 stars and states "Further Explorations is a solid, even striking outing, and if it isn't maybe quite as flashy as some of its predecessors, it is no less substantive and revealing".

Okay, let’s get this out of the way first – yes, this is the same Europe who had a global mega-hit with ‘The Final Countdown’ nearly 30 years ago (blimey!). You may laugh and you may titter but that’s one more global mega-hit than any of us have had so let’s leave the hairspray and make-up comments in the past and focus on the music, and ever since reuniting in 2003 after a decade away these all-conquering Swedes have been on peak form with such hard rocking gems as 2009’s brilliant “Last Look at Eden” and 2012’s bluesier “Bag of Bones” proving that good bands can get better with age…

Electronic musician Thom Brennan, while reaching inward, seeks to create music with an emphasis on his relationship with the forces of the natural world. His album Silver, with its eight works, moves between the dreamlike stillness of contemplative space, to the seductive powers of shimmering synthscapes, to the fierce brilliance of churning harmonic motion. On Silver Brennan probes deeper into familiar themes. His musical ideas are reiterative but not repetitive and run through this album like a strong current. Waves of sound roll towards the listener in seemingly infinite variations, each somewhat different from the next…

Desperate is the debut studio album and second overall album by Australian rock band Divinyls, released in 1983 by Chrysalis Records. The album contains the hits "Boys in Town", "Science Fiction" and "Siren (Never Let You Go)".Divinyls formed in 1980, founded by Mark McEntee and fronted by lead singer Chrissy Amphlett. After scoring several gigs, they were discovered by Australian director Ken Cameron. This led to Divinyls providing the entire soundtrack for his 1982 film Monkey Grip. Amphlett was also given a supporting role in the film, playing a temperamental rock singer loosely based on herself, fronting a band played by other Divinyls members. In the film, the band performed their debut single "Boys in Town", as well as other songs "Only Lonely", "Elsie", "Only You", "Girlfriends" and "Gonna Get You", the latter being the first appearance of them in the film. The soundtrack Music from Monkey Grip was acknowledged as a Divinyls album, and when released in 1982, it made the top twenty-five of the Australian Albums Chart.

In 1986, Isaac Hayes signed with CBS Records and many hoped he would make a big comeback. Despite containing some great songs, superb production and strong and passionate vocals from Isaac this CD was very poorly promoted and it failed to get the radio airplay it deserved. Standout numbers featured include "If You Want My Lovin', Do Me Right", "It Never Rains In London", "Thank God For Love" and Isaac's crushingly soulful remake of "Hey Girl". "U-Turn" may well be one of Isaac Hayes' most obscure and underrated albums but it's well worth getting if you can find it.
