On this live-album Hakwind plays as a powertrio, but still manages to have a great spacey sound. The album sounds like a never-ending psychedelic dream and has few pauzes. The cohesion is very good on live albums of Hakwind. I like the beginning with Quark, Strangeness and Charm, which is a good song with nice lyrics.

Genre: Jazz | Label: Xanadu Records

The music on this Xanadu LP includes seven selections from a quartet date featuring guitarist Jimmy Raney, pianist Sonny Clark, bassist Red Mitchell and drummer Bobby White. That particular session has been reissued on CD by Vogue along with five "new" alternate takes, so this album has dropped in value. However, completists will be interested to know that, in addition to that excellent session, Raney and Clark are teamed together with tenorman Gosta Theselius on two other numbers ("Jumping for Jane" and "Invention") that have not yet reappeared. The Raney-Clark partnership did not survive this European tour, which found them mostly backing Billie Holiday; a pity it did not, because the communication between the two masterful players was quite impressive.

Although Cherry Poppin' Daddies became a popular act during the swing revival of the late 1990s, the eight-piece band formed one decade prior in Eugene, Oregon. Vocalist Steve Perry (aka MC Large Drink, a nickname intended to distance Perry from the famous Journey frontman) and bassist Dan Schmid initially crossed paths at the University of Oregon, and a shared interest in punk music convinced the students to leave school and pursue a band. After playing together in the Jazz Greats and St. Huck, the duo shifted gears in 1989 by forming Cherry Poppin' Daddies, a unique band whose lineup gradually encompassed guitarist Jason Moss, drummer Tim Donahue, trumpeter Dana Heitman, saxophonists Sean Flannery and Ian Early, and keyboard player Dustin Lanker. The musicians' dedication to ska, swing, jazz, and…

Like Mr. Universe, Glory Road put to shame many of the albums Deep Purple recorded after Ian Gillan's departure. Play this album next to Purple's post-Gillan 1975 release Come Taste the Band, and it becomes clear just how superior some of Gillan's solo albums were. Those who like Gillan for melodic yet blistering heavy metal won't be disappointed by "Sleeping on the Job," "Unchain Your Brain," and other inspired, high-octane rockers.

When The Silence Is… (2009) [Reissue 2013]. Some years ago Koan set a dazzling milestone for all lovers of sophisticated, psychedelic Ambient music. Their album 'When The Silence Is Speaking' was sold out within no time, and up to today this ocean of complex harmonies and floating ecstasy keeps reverberating through the Chill Outs, living rooms and headphones of this planet. Even more. Instead of eventually dying away, the echoes of this magnificent album grew louder and louder, morphing into new rhythms and tone colours. Title by title a complete remix collection took shape. Now it is released together with a re-print of the original CD…

Singer-songwriters Deb Talan & Steve Tannen began writing together the night they met, and soon formed indie band The Weepies. On the strength of their simple yet insightful songwriting and distinctive harmonies, they quietly sold more than a million records, with over 17 million streams on Spotify, and 20 million views on YouTube. They married and had three children, rarely touring but continuing to release their music, five records over seven years. At 16 songs and almost an hour long, SIRENS shows a band at the height of its powers.

Colours Of The Night, Peter Broderick's first full-length for Bella Union in three years, had a rather odd conception to say the least. The American born multi-instrumentalist and songwriter went along for the ride when invited for a so-called "recording residency" in the small town of Lucerne, Switzerland. Through several memorable concert evenings in the town on various tours, he developed a friendship with some of the locals, who eventually got the idea of inviting Broderick to be a guest of the city for three weeks while recording an album with a backing band of local musicians.

Medeski, Martin & Wood's Shack Man is the best example to date of the trio's cerebral fusion of soul-jazz, hip-hop, and post-punk worldbeat. Relying on a laid-back groove for most the album, the group just rolls along. Shack Man is the kind of album that will appeal most to soul-jazz beginners; for aficionados, the lack of grit in the groove makes it rather tedious.

This CD captures some of Michael's best playing to date, in a classic hard rock/metal context true to his roots and his fans. Featuring phenomenal vocalist Kelly Keeling and powerful drummer Shane Gaalaas, "The Unforgiven" smokes with red-hot rockers like "Rude Awakening", "The Mess I've Made", "Pilot Of Your Soul" and more. Schenker shows no signs of slowing down. Surprisingly good hard rock album with tons of hooks, smooth vocals and, of course, great axe work.

Although they were often dismissed as a fluffy singles group in their day, Sweet crafted a handful of strong albums in the mid-'70s that sported some surprisingly muscular hard rock. A fine example of this trend is Sweet Fanny Adams. Although this album got little exposure in America on its own, over half of this album's contents ended up on the American edition of Desolation Boulevard…
