The talent of clarinet/sax player Luca Velotti has been widely recognized in the last thirty years, both as mainstream jazz virtuoso performing on international stages (side by side with names such as Scot Hamilton, Bob Wilber and Kenny Davern among many others) and stable sideman with Italian songwriter Paolo Conte. Velotti, who felt in love with the tradition of jazz during his teens, has always proposed his personal view of the classic language, carefully avoiding any sterile imitation. Bitter Sweet & Twisted is rock band The Quireboys's second studio album, released in 1993. The album was released on EMI and went into the UK Albums Chart at #31. Three of the tracks from this album ("Tramps & Thieves", "Brother Louie" and "Last Time") were released as singles, the latter of which was only released in Japan. "Brother Louie" was the highest charting from this album, as it reached #32 on the UK Singles Chart.

After working with Burnett numerous times most recently on the soundtrack for the Joel and Ethan Coen film Inside Llewyn Davis and the related Town Hall/Showtime concert Another Day, Another Time Punch Brothers decided to join forces with the multiple Grammy Award winning producer for their new record. Last summer, the band and Burnett spent a month at Hollywood s Ocean Way Recording laying down the songs that guitarist Chris Eldridge, bassist Paul Kowert, banjo player Noam Pikelny, mandolinist and lead singer Chris Thile, and fiddler Gabe Witcher had written during several writing retreats last winter and spring.
