A never-ending search for advancement drives Enrico Pieranunzi and opting to build a fresh musical framework with an unproven quartet is concrete evidence of this. On a program of eight original Pieranunzi compositions, the Roman pianist is joined by Matt Penman (bass), Ralph Alessi (trumpet, cornet and flugelhorn) and Donny McCaslin (saxophones) - four superb musicians from different generations. With no reassuring support from drums, the quartet take all the jazz they have experienced and strive to conceive their own concept.

In global pop industry terms, jazz - funksters Mezzoforte would in 1983 have seemed rather an unlikely bunch to become the pioneers of a long awaited ´breaking of the ice´ for the desperately isolated musical community of Iceland. Mezzoforte indeed became the surprise hit makers of 1983 in Europe, with a single called Garden Party taken from an album fittingly titled Surprise Surprise! Due to the Anniversary Tour they present their best tracks on the new double cd compilation personally choosen with special photos and linernotes in English.

When you hear David Pulkingham play a few things happen. One thing is that you feel the urge to run home and practice whatever it is you thought you were kind of good at until you are better at it. It’s the effect of the master craftsman…you are amazed by the ability. And he makes it actually look easy, because it’s moving and emotional and you know it ain’t. I have had the privilege of standing next to Dave at gigs for a few years now and one of the things I look forward to are all the ghosts lining up to get inside his heart and fingers and play. Dave looks like the Celt that he is. Pulkingham one of the remnants of the great Cornish tribe. What comes from that blood is clearly part of his deal. But a great number of gypsies from many tribes also inhabit old, grumbling, half wild gypsies who get a hold of him and don’t let go until they’re finished. Dave’s playing is a vehicle of many souls. He’s an amazing student of music, sure. That’s clear. But the ghosts know it too and take full advantage. He scares me, amazes me, moves me to tears. Doesn’t get better in my book.

Since Sedaka's Back was a hit, Neil Sedaka and co-producer Graham Gouldman saw no reason to mess with success on its follow-up, The Hungry Years. The record is essentially Sedaka's Still Back, complete with the same adult contemporary/MOR material and slick production that marked its predecessor…

"Ensemble 415 is a chamber ensemble devoted largely to the performance of Baroque music on period instruments. The numerical reference in the group's name derives from the pitch used for tuning instruments in the Baroque era. In performing chamber music, Ensemble 415 consists of just a few players, but for larger compositions, the number expands to a minimum of 13 and can reach up to as high as 40 performers. The ensemble's repertory has been broad over the years, taking in many Baroque standards by J.S. Bach, Vivaldi, and Handel, as well as lesser known fare by Muffat and others…"

Karen Matheson’s outstanding worldwide reputation as lead vocalist with crossover folk artists Capercaillie is based on 30 years on the world stage and over a million album sales. Among numerous awards, she received the inaugural Scots Trad Music award for Best Gaelic Singer in 2003 and an OBE in 2006. Her unmistakeable voice is as distinctive as it is haunting and, along with truly innovative interpretations of Hebridean music, has been a major factor in the success Capercaillie have enjoyed. Many of the songs Karen collected for Urram have come from the incredible archive at The School Of Scottish Studies. Gura Mise Tha Gu Dubhach (one of the many songs collected by Dr John Lorne Campbell) opens the album with a delicate guitar chime that pre-empts a more familiar mix of keyboard, percussion and Karen’s dark, expressive vocal. And it’s here that the first of Karen’s international contributors makes an appearance, with a welcome injection of eastern spice from the sarod of Soumik Datta.

When she was 13, conductor Herbert von Karajan invited her to play with the Berlin Philharmonic: she made her public debut on stage in 1976 at the Lucerne Festival, playing Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 4 in D major. In 1977, she made her debut at the Salzburg Festival and with the English Chamber Orchestra under Daniel Barenboim. By the mid-'90s, most bands had abandoned the sounds and sensibilities of late-'60s psychedelia, which is what makes Kula Shaker's debut album, K, such a weird, bracing listen. The band doesn't simply revive the swirling guitar and organ riffs of psychedelia, it embraces the mysticism and Eastern spirituality that informed the music…

Carey is at his best here. A lot of heavy harp playing, his voice is very strong also. He has a great way of putting his songs together. His writing skills are second to none, he must have a natural talent for this. Over the years he just keeps writing good quality stuff, it seems a lot of writers lose this talent in time. Not a bad song on this one, very strong.

By 1970, the Soft Machine were ensconced into what would become its most revered lineup and repertoire. The two performance excerpts are from one of the many European jaunts the Softs took that year. While the material leans most heavily on the band's Third (1970) album, the second and significantly longer set concludes with the finale from Volume Two (1969)…

Christine Kittrell made some of the best R&B of the 1950s and '60s without ever becoming a household name. She was the leading nightclub vocalist on the rocking Nashville scene in the late 1940s and '50s. A marvelous singer - far more versatile than most of her contemporaries - Christine worked with Joe Turner, Fats Domino, Memphis Slim, Little Walter, Johnny Otis and even Count Basie. Her relatively few recordings, mainly on unfashionable labels, possessed rare expressiveness that could elevate a mundane song into something exceptional. She sang late night mood songs like Heartache Blues and Don't Do It, and pounding rockers like Call His Name and Lord Have Mercy - where she is backed by Little Richard on piano and vocals. Her rerecording of Call His Name in the 60s, became a northern soul classic. She also recorded the original version of the anthemic I'm A Woman. Her biggest hit, Sittin' Here Drinking, featured one of her trademark spoken intros.
