Free's return in 1972 was scarred by any number of traumas, not least of all the departure of bassist Andy Fraser and the virtual incapacity of guitarist Paul Kossoff – one-half of the original band, and the lion's share of its spirit as well. But did their erstwhile bandmates let it show? Not a jot. The hastily recruited Tetsu Yamauchi, and vocalist Paul Rodgers himself, filled the breach instrumentally, and probably 50 percent of the ensuing Heartbreaker ranks among Free's finest ever work…

Backing away from the diversity of OU812, the band turns in some of the most basic, straightforward rock & roll of its career. At times, F.U.C.K. recalls the sleek hard rock of Hagar's early-'80s albums, and it's undeniable that his limited vocal power had a great deal to do with the obvious nature of most of this music…

Anouar Brahem’s third leader date for ECM explores the oud player’s incidental music for Tunisian film and theatre as interpreted by a shifting nexus of musicians, new and old alike. His compositional side takes precedence this time around, for it is accordionist Richard Galliano who lights the foreground with “Comme un depart” and hardly recedes until “Des rayons et des ombres,” the latter a superbly jazzy romp with Palle Danielsson and Jon Christensen. Bassist and drummer, respectively, add buoyancy to “E la nave va” and “Aïn ghazel,” culminating in the shadow of Jean-Marc Larché’s soprano for the title track.

Silent Temple is the "Solo" project of Amos Hart (Eikthyrnir), though the talents of other musicians are regularly employed, Amos writes all of the music and lyrics.

All the Salzburg M22 productions were outrageous. "Over the top!" Intended, of course, to be fresh and challenging as theater, while maintaining the highest musical standards. Many of them failed, to my eyes/ears anyway, at one goal or the other, and several failed at both. I believe American audiences had more objections to them than European, and I know why: many European opera lovers, with far more opportunities to attend productions, would have seen and heard more conventional stagings. They would have a stock of memories of the action, the scene, etc. For them, this staging of "La Finta Gardiniera" and even more so the stagings of the later Mozart masterpieces would have seemed a fresh variation on the familiar, an extension of the possibilities of the opera… By Giordano Bruno

Over 17 previous albums, The Necks have explored as many different kinds of space and texture the piano trio format (occasionally with electronics) would seemingly allow for. But Australia's longstanding avant-ambient jazz unit, while having an instantly identifiable sound, has never made the same record twice – even though they typically employ a single, set-length track in doing so. Unlike their Northern Spy debut, 2013's airy, gentle, and drifting Open, Vertigo is a dark, brooding, sometimes dissonant – and occasionally explosive – outing. The 43-minute work is informally split into movement-like halves, though its sense of fluidity is constant, no matter what arises in the proceedings – and there is plenty.
