    Roger Espinoza's Café Fuego is a good example of what could be called "flamenco light" – in other words, modern flamenco-minded acoustic guitar playing that tends to be light (although not lightweight), relaxed, and pop-influenced. This 2002 release is hardly the work of a flamenco purist; Café Fuego is closer to Ottmar Liebert than Paco de Lucia or Tomatito. But not everyone who plays acoustic Spanish guitar is obligated to be another Tomatito, and even though Café Fuego isn't a masterpiece, it is enjoyable and fairly creative. Spanish flamenco isn't Espinoza's only influence; although the Los Angeles-based, Nicaraguan-born guitarist is very flamenco-minded, he isn't afraid to incorporate Afro-Cuban and South American elements.

    This album of classic-jazz fusion contains the works of composer Nikolai Kapustin (b. 1937). By the 1950s, Kapustin had built a reputation for himself as a jazz pianist and master improviser. It is only in recent years, however, that his classical-form compositions have come to light through recordings. Christine Rauh is the soloist featured on this recording. During the recording process, she maintained a close relationship with the composer, and she does an outstanding job of conveying the groove, wit, and rhythmic vitality of these compositions. Performing alongside Ms. Rauh are saxophonist Peter Lehel, pianist Benyamin Nuss, vibraphonist Ni Fan, and the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Kaiserslautern Saarbrucken under the direction of Nicholas Collon.

    Well over a decade passed since they took the U.S. charts by storm with their infectious single "Elevate My Mind." Since then, much has passed underneath the radar of the dance community when it comes to Stereo MC's. Through the 18 tracks here, the finest moments of their career unravel. And while this may have been compiled with those uninitiated to their other songs in mind, this is also a very nice compilation to have for the dedicated fan who has followed the group religiously. Their two biggest hits ("Connected" and "Elevate My Mind") stand firmly as the crown jewels of the release, but this is definitely not a detractor from the other quality numbers on Retroactive. It's a solid guidebook to a band both ahead of its time and sorely overlooked.

    A rather neat little four-track CD consisting of one acoustic band track and three solo acoustic live and studio recordings by Frampton, issued in Japan in conjunction with the release of the 1994 album Peter Frampton. The band track "You Can Be Sure" isn't very impressive, but the classic cuts, especially "Baby I Love Your Way," shows a darkening of the voice, which improves his singing. None of the numbers, however, show any loss of the dexterous and passionate guitar skills that got Frampton into gigs with George Harrison and John Entwistle in their respective primes. The sound is first-rate, and it all makes you wonder why Frampton has never done a complete "unplugged" album.
