IDW's is a year old! And the franchise which now consists of three titles--the core series, the origins, and the side of cobra--has certainly come a long way from where it was stagnating with Devil's Due Publishing before the transfer to IDW. Oddly enough, it is with the Cobra title where the best work and output are being done. For one that structurally symmetrical Cobra one-shot published just three weeks ago (posted here in Avaxhome by yours truly) was not just special--it was, to say the least, unforgettable and outstanding. Now if they could perhaps do the same for this flagship series, to even things a bit, I'll be happy.

+ The Man With No Name Issues #1-11 and Other Westerns

It's not too often that movies get made into comics after the movie has been out there for a few years. Here is what MTV had to say about this official movie-to-comic adaptation: "Clint Eastwood’s iconic Man with No Name rides again in this brand new story by writer Chuck Dixon and artist Esteve Polls. I don’t care what you say about Dirty Harry, folks— and the rest of the “Man With No Name” films were Eastwood at his cigar-chompin’, squinty-eyed best. Well, you'll say right away it would be hard scripting a main character who hardly speaks. Issue #4 continues the art (Polls' gritty style), and the slow, deliberate development as with the previous three issues that makes you feel as if the story was lifted right from the movies and it definitely reads with a cinematic style (note the wide panel layouts) and pace clearly reminiscent of Sergio Leone. You can almost hear that haunting, taunting theme. Still great stuff.

along with Batman are two superhero properties where, ever since Frank Miller's deconstructions of their characters and mythos, creators are always inspired with the wildest and the boldest of ideas and storylines. In Diggle and De La Torre begin with a stark change in status quo: Matt Murdock has broken all ties with his friends and assumed leadership of The Hand, the deadly ninja cult he's been battling since the days of Miller and Klaus Jansen. It's a radical transformation, to be sure, but to drive home the bolt to help seal it Diggle has Daredevil undergo the final initiation that will make him truly the leader of The Hand. In issue #502, the second of Diggle's run on the Man Without Fear (3rd if you count the special) we get to see what Diggle really is doing with the character: he is making Daredevil work within the context of both Ed Brubaker's previous run, and the current "Dark Reign" status quo of the Marvel Universe. Matt Murdock is not really deep into a dark abyss as some would have it; he is merely adjusting his crime-fighting to an increasingly brutal world, using the means available to him. The artwork is also perfectly suited to the style and to the direction where the title is going. Great development from a sure and confident creative team.

After the overwhelming praise from fans and critics alike for , Mike Mignola and cowriter Joshua Dysart return to the Hellboy universe for , a five-issue miniseries continuing the early exploits of the fledgling Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense and its founder, Trevor Bruttenhom—occult investigator and guardian of the infant Hellboy. Despite the fact that the Hellboy/B.P.R.D. franchise has ballooned over the years and creator Mike Mignola rarely has the time to illustrate any of these stories, the various mini-series and one-shots over the years have managed to achieve a surprisingly consistent visual style. 1947 is no exception. With art by Eisner award winners Gabriel Bá and Fábio Moon, it is a visual treat. Mike Mignola himself talks about Bá and Moon: "Their work is amazing, and we’re giving them an epic gothic tale, a moody and shadowy nightmare unlike anything they’ve done, and darker, scarier, and more mysterious than anything we’ve done in such a long format." And about 1947: "In the 1946 series, the B.P.R.D. was just two guys and one of them died. In 1947 we see the humble beginnings of the Bureau we know and love today."

When ancient giants begin to rise from their graves across England, Hellboy is invited to join a mysterious group called the Wild Hunt and help bring them down. But the hunt leads to betrayal, and Hellboy finds himself up against enemies as angry about what he is as what he's done. Hot on the heels of the 2008 summer film release , Mike Mignola and Duncan Fegredo reunite with , the follow-up to events set in motion in their 2007 Hellboy miniseries Darkness Calls.
