16 Golden Classics is interesting enough for the excellent Top 20 hit "Hushabye" and early guest appearances by Paul Simon and Jay Traynor of Jay & the Americans, but this undeservedly obscure vocal quintet had a consistently enchanting sound and several very good songs. The tinkling xylophone and soft harmonies make the Mystics a real find, and the group's ability to put their stamp on well-worn material redeems even the most obvious covers ("A Sunday Kind of Love," "White Cliffs of Dover"). Golden Classics compiles practically everything the group recorded for Laurie Records from 1959-1961 and is a rewarding anthology for serious enthusiasts of white doo wop.
This series started out in 1990 as Super Hits, with each issue having a cartoonish photo/drawing as cover art. There were 20 volumes in the original Super Hits series. In 1995, the series was renamed AM Gold. The first four volumes were reissued using the new series title and a modified version of the cover art work from SUD-05, but that was soon replaced with a second AM Gold cover design that featured a gold record. The Super Hits series used the SUD- prefix, while the AM Gold series used the AM1- prefix. In the late 1990s, the AM1- prefix was replaced with the R834- prefix, but the volumes continued as before. Two AM Gold budget box sets were introduced in the late 1990s, with 12 tracks instead of the usual 18-24. These were meant for retail sales, unlike the normal subscription CDs.
Dream Attic heralds the return of Richard Thompson, one of the most distinguished guitarists and songwriters of our time, with a magnificent collection of 13 new songs. This deluxe edition includes a bonus CD of all 13 tracks performed as acoustic demos.
In July 2010 Q-Dance celebrated its 10 year anniversary with De Q-Dance Feestfabriek in the Amsterdam ArenA.
The Billboard Music Awards, sponsored by Billboard magazine, is one of several United States music awards shows (among the others are the Grammy Awards and the American Music Awards). It had been held annually in December until it went dormant in 2007, but it returned in May 2011.
Import-only two CD compilation from the British Folk/Rock legend highlighting his critically successful years with Island Records. Along with Nick Drake, John Martyn was one of the most compelling British singer/songwriters to emerge during the 1970s. Martyn specialized in an acoustic, bluesy Folk sound, but he was also a restless experimentalist, running his guitar through all manner of effects processors and incorporating elements of Jazz, Pop, and ambient music. This double disc set is a survey of Martyn's work for Island Records, ranging from 1971's folky Bless The Weather through 1980's pop-oriented Grace And Danger. In between, listeners are treated to a comprehensive sampling of the artist's talents, from his sonically expansive guitar-scapes to his poetic, meticuloussense of songcraft. The music from Martyn's early-to-mid '70s period stands up the best, but the later work selected here is strong too. This is an excellent introduction back to front.
