Level 42 peaked musically before their first official released album called "Level 42". On the success of the very well commercially sounding album, Polydor released a second album of even earlier music from the band. The record company released the "Early tapes" of Jazz funk fusion. On this CD Mark King instrumentally sounds like Stanley Clarke,the album is brilliant. The album proved that these guys were professional musicians and not as presented by the record company as five west London laddies.

In 1981 Level 42 released their first Polydor single, "Love Games", which became a Top 40 hit. They then cut their critically acclaimed, self-titled debut album, which was an immediate success throughout Europe. The band quickly established themselves as concert favourites, taking advantage of the high performance skills of all four members.

Those familiar with the dense, percussive style that pianist McCoy Tyner has cultivated since the 1970s onwards may be surprised by what they hear on Inception. Like Reaching Fourth and Nights of Ballads and Blues, this album gives listeners the chance to hear what a very young Tyner sounded like outside the confines of the classic John Coltrane quartet of the early '60s; it reveals a lyrical approach to jazz piano that seems a far cry from Tyner's mature style. ~ AllMusic
