    Jazz | 1cd | EAC Rip | Flac + Cue + Log | covers
    Lake, LACD195 | rel: 2005 | 440Mb

The direct successor to an earlier Lake collection, Acker Bilk's Acker, Mr. Acker Bilk's Lansdowne Folio rounds up four tracks from A Golden Treasury of Bilk, a single, three previously unreleased numbers, and finally, a dozen more from the original Lansdowne Portfolio album. It's a gripping collection as well; though Bilk was certainly well on his way to embracing the pop mainstream by this time, and his ear for melody was certainly leaning toward the more popular end of things, still his stabs at Cole Porter's "My Heart Belongs to Daddy," the traditional "Lord Let Me in the Lifeboat," and "Go Tell It On the Mountain" are nothing if not rousing and, if Bilk's version of "Tishomingo Blues" has little of the drama of Ken Colyer's earlier Denis Preston-produced rendition of the same number, again one must remember the very different audiences that the two men were playing to.

MSG is the second album by the hard rock band Michael Schenker Group. The band was formed in 1979 by the former Scorpions and UFO guitarist Michael Schenker. Producer Ron Nevison's high production values resulted in the recording of this album going over budget, a crippling debt that dogged the band for the rest of their short career. Though the band at the time had reservations about the recording, it is regarded by fans as perhaps their finest hour.

Label: Prism Leisure | Rel: 2001

This compilation mixes material from various sources from the latter part of Vic Damone's career (which is to say, after he departed the major labels in the late 1960s). He tackles a selection of Jimmy Webb's late-'60s hits including "Didn't We?," "By the Time I Get to Phoenix," and "MacArthur Park," as well as other songs of the era such as the Stevie Wonder hit "For Once in My Life," O.C. Smith's "Little Green Apples," Frankie Valli's "Can't Take My Eyes Off You," and the theme from the 1969 James Bond film On Her Majesty's Secret Service, "We Have All the Time in the World." Studio recordings give way to live tracks, while the album's final selections sound like they may be its earliest recordings.

This collection contains some of Doris Day's hits and some great covers. Committed fans won't find anything new or unusual here, but this set provides a brief introduction to the music of Doris Day for those who just want a little of her music at a budget price. I suspect that a few people who start with this collection will become captivated by the wonderful sounds emanating from their speakers and will eventually buy more of her music. In the meantime, they will derive much pleasure from the music herein.

This latest from Kim Clement is quite aptly named. It is a God-Inspired instrumental album that truly does refresh your soul. With all the "crazyness" going on in the world today, it is extremely comforting to just let this album play wiyhout distraction. Even letting it play on your device in the background brings God's peace and rest to the atmosphere. I can only hope the future will bring more versions of this album.

Official Release #56. Like the first volume of the series, You Can't Do That on Stage Anymore, Vol. 4 was put together without a specific theme in mind. It has a little of everything, from straight rock songs to more complex numbers, from stage antics to guitar solos. All eras of Frank Zappa's career are visited (including tracks from the 1988 tour), but the '80s provided the majority of the material.

This album chronicles a 1959 Carnegie Hall bill shared between Muddy and Slim. In retrospect, it might be seen as something of a warm-up for Muddy, who would soon wow the world with the 1960 performance captured on his NEWPORT album. Muddy's style was much more primal and sensual than the more urbane, slightly Charles Brown-like sound of Peter Chatman (AKA Memphis Slim), but the two blues giants accompany each other here with sensitivity and taste. Slim dominates the proceedings, with 13 cuts to Muddy's four, and his sophisticated vocal and piano stylings are a joy to the ear.

Boito’s resplendent retelling of Goethe’s Faust, a monumental work of "choral grandeur and melodic richness" in one of the most impressive productions ever seen at the War Memorial Opera House. The cast includes Ramón Vargas, a tenor "in ravishing voice", as the philosopher who sells his soul to the Devil; the "luminous, compelling" Patricia Racette as the woman he desires; and, in the vividly menacing title role, the "seductively malevolent" bass-baritone Ildar Abdrazakov, a "fullbodied bass-baritone" renowned for his "wonderfully evil portrayals". An Italian maestro will be on the podium, showing once again why "we are blessed to have Nicola Luisotti in San Francisco".

Race is the third studio album released by Australian new wave band, Pseudo Echo. It was released via EMI Australia in 1988 and RCA Records internationally in 1989. Race resulted in a musical change for the group as it mirrored the music landscape at the time; dominated by big hair, big guitars and rock. While the album no doubt alienated the majority of the bands fan base, it equally attracted a new breed of rock loving fans.

Ride With Me is a 1989 Steppenwolf bootleg CD of a live show in Gothenburg, Sweden at Konserthuset on 20 September, 1972. It was recorded for a Swedish National Radio show called Tonkraft but it is believed the recording is taken from a late 1970's broadcast. It focuses on the band's later material but they do "Magic Carpet Ride". The entire show and performance sounds amazing.
