This is a Land where many prolific members of electroniculture reside, creating their own brand of West Coast Trancefusion and Rhythmic Pacifica. Diversity is the diet upon which these beat hedonist survive; house, dub, Detroit techno, global ambient, jazz, ethno experimentalism and sounds yet to be defined are what these people mix into their own sonic melting pot. What comes out is the West Coast's most eclectic cascade of inspiring soulsonics. This is the first collection of superb new sounds from West Coast Electroniculture, featuring Vancouver's champions of Beat Hedonism.

A pleasing singer in her mid-twenties, Alex Pangman loves the music of the 1920s and '30s. For her second recording for the Canadian Sensation label, she performs 13 vintage obscurities plus a lone standard ("Prisoner of Love") and her own "Melancholy Lullaby." Although her voice is small, it is personable and she digs into the lyrics of such early gems as "Mama's Gone Goodbye," "I Had Someone Else Before I Had You," "Through the Courtesy of Love," "Concentratin' on You," and "Careless." Particularly intriguing are the four separate groups that the singer uses. Her Jazz Manouche is a quartet with trumpeter Chris Whitely, two acoustic guitars, and bass. Her Hired Hands is more in the Western swing vein with trumpeter Peter Ecklund, violinist Erin Solomon, and Whitely on steel guitar, plus two guitars, piano, and bass…

Jazz singer Annie Sellick has it all-sensational voice, commanding stage presence, striking appearance and infectious enthusiasm. She has won a large, devoted following and earned rave reviews, winning numerous "Best Jazz Artist" awards in the Nashville media. Rhino chips away at more rock nostalgia of the surface variety. This time out, both the '70s and '80 are pilfered for chart-toppers by Foreigner, Foghat, the Romantics, Bad Company, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and the Knack. Thankfully, despite the agitprop cover art, one is spared any overriding theme here, save for a virtual romp through an '80s mods (read: new wavers) and rockers party. And there's even a bit of hip-hop by Tone-Loc, and some proto-lounge swing from Buster Poindexter to bolster the mix. But, the bulk here will be best enjoyed by muscle-car driving heshers who don't mind hearing their favorite Frampton or Joe Walsh cut yet one more time.

In addition to his many opera recordings for Decca over the years conductor Richard Bonynge also made arguably an even greater cultural contribution with these often first and only recordings of these important Ballets rarities. Unfortunately the bulk of the repertoire here is known mostly to dancers than to those who simply enjoy outstanding orchestral music- and it is to the latter that this set couldn't be more urgently recommended. For ballet professionals and music librarians, this quintessential offering is a must.

Official Release #58. For the fifth volume in the You Can't Do That on Stage Anymore series, Frank Zappa prepared two unrelated discs. Disc one features the original Mothers of Invention in unreleased live and studio recordings mainly from 1969 (but also one from 1965 and a couple from 1967-1968). Disc two documents the 1982 European tour. There is something wicked – almost obscene – in this pairing, and it surely was intentional. Throughout the 1980s, fans of the early Mothers had attacked Zappa's integrity in the case of the re-recorded CD reissues of We're Only in It for the Money and Cruising with Ruben & the Jets, and often despised the scatological antics and straightforward rock stylings of his latter bands.
