By one legend for another, Todd Rundgren's Johnson is a wonderous album of reinterpretations by Todd Rundgren of legendary blues man Robert Johnson. Johnson, described by Eric Clapton as "the most important blues singer that ever lived" is represented in a worthy manner as Todd Rundgren and band recreate the songs that have made Johnson a legend beyond his years.

After years spent emphasizing her compositions and bandleading abilities, in the late '80s, Carla Bley finally started featuring her own piano playing to a much greater degree. A melodic but explorative player, Bley (whose use of space sometimes recalls Thelonious Monk) interacts closely with the electric bass of Steve Swallow on this excellent duet session, performing six of her originals and two of Swallow's. ~Scott Yanow, rovi

Genre : new wave, indie pop

This is the third and final collection to feature the team of Nat King Cole and Gordon Jenkins (arranger). Their earlier collaborations yielded the uniformly superior chart-topper Love Is the Thing (1957) and follow-up The Very Thought of You (1958). As the moniker suggests, there is a perceptible poignancy and longing weaved throughout Jenkins' arrangements. The opener "Where Did Everyone Go?" possesses a solitude accentuated by responsive instrumentation that supports, yet never intrudes. ~ CDUniverse

Earlier this year, Brian Williams (aka Lustmord) was commissioned by the Church of Satan to perform at the first ever public Satanic High Mass. Of course the date of that event was June 6, 2006, coinciding with the release of the Omen remake and a Slayer album, all trying to maximize the evil that can be ascribed to a trio of sixes. For his score of the event, Williams culled choice elements from his impressive career of dark ambient soundscaping. The Tibetan horns, melodic phrases, and monstrous vocal bellows from Heresy are prominent in the mix, as is the vast expanse of anti-gravitational drone which dominates The Place Where The Black Stars Hang. Tesla coil discharges, metallic airlocks slamming shut, hallowed plainsongs drenched in cathedral reverb, down-pitched electrical crackle, and elongated gong resonance also feature into the mix of the score. It's a thoroughly blackened sound of the self-made individual gaping at a vast emptiness of creation.

Tenor saxophonist Javon Jackson deserves a lot of credit for stretching himself on this release. Although he can sound very close to Joe Henderson at times, on this set he interprets a wide-ranging repertoire that allows him to avoid falling into the revivalist hard bop category. In addition to a pair of originals (the medium-uptempo blues "Hamlet's Favorite Son" and "Assessment" which is dedicated to Elvin Jones) ~ AllMusic

Gorgeous ambient/downtempo album from Cochois which I have played a lot since I purchased it in Germany 3 years ago. From ethereal, haunting melodics over claustrophobic mechanics to warm nighttime moods, this album has it all. Chrome De Lux is yet another musical piece that strengthens Elektrolux's status as one of my alltime favourite labels.

With sound design & production by Lustmord and guitar & vocals by King Buzzo of the Melvins, Juggernaut unleashes four tracks¹ worth of menacing ambient tremors, boomeranged drones and ominous sonic moonscapes in swell after unsettling swell of creeping electronic deviance. Initially recorded for an art opening by hot-rod enthusiast / notorious tit man Chris "Coop" Cooper in August 2004, this version of the Juggernaut collaboration is a limited release and an updated version of the original recording.

Sub Luna is a Swedish duo formed by Mikael Lindblom (also a live collaborator for Karjalan Sissit) and Fredrik Sooberg. After four years of silence they return with their new album Awake! Their sound has definitely been refined and expands the framework established with their previous album, the double CD "In The Shade of time". On this second album Sub Luna are merging the more traditional elements of the dark folk genre with influences from the world of pop and rock and thus avoid falling into trappings of the genre. Awake! Also symbolically marks the ending of one era and the beginning of another.
