At 34 years Frank Woeste has grown out the image of an up and coming jazz pianist. He has made himself a name working with Mederic Collignon and Ibrahim Maalouf, showing his talents as a pianist and as a creator of unique sounds on the Fender Rhodes. He has become a master in the art of blending the piano and the Rhodes, mixing contemporary jazz with his classical background and pop music. His new album Double You, featuring flautist and singer Malik Mezzadri, is an example of all this. Convincing compositions, daring improvisations that fit his songwriting, splendid arrangements and great interplay between the musicians : Double You has all the ingredients of a great album.

Journeyman jazz trumpeter Wayne Bergeron delivers a lush and fiery big-band performance on his 2007 album Plays Well with Others. Featuring Bergeron's own big band, the album also includes a guest appearance by iconic high-note trumpeter Maynard Ferguson. Much of the music here is crisply urbane, swinging mainstream jazz in the "little big band" tradition and should appeal to fans of acutely orchestrated ensemble jazz.Bergeron's high-note trumpet work is astonishing.

Most of the songs were recorded in the 1950s and as a result, 21st century technology (re-mixing and re-mastering) has benefited the original sound quality. My Baby Just Cares For Me sung by Nina Simone opens the program. Her instantly recognizable vocals and her piano playing are a sure reminder of what this inimitable singer brought to the jazz genre.

Jimmy Witherspoon was one of the smoothest blues singers to come along in the late 1940s, and his earthy yet elegant style was versatile enough for him to "cross over" into jazz and even rock. "Blues, The Whole Blues…", his last studio recording, was picked by critic Frank-John Hadley as one of the 10 best albums of 1992.

Some may say three years is a long time to take between debut and sophomore albums. But when Rolling Stone says your first album is a ''gorgeous folk rock solo album,'' and when the LA Times says that you never ''veer too far from a killer melody or winsome harmony,'' or when MAGNET says your first album is, ''a simmering, almost McCartney-esque debut…'' you want to make sure you get it right. Such is the case with Liam Finn's FOMO.

Jackie McLean's slightly acidic tone on alto can be instantly identified. He perfectly symbolizes the intensity, passion, excitement and urgency of New York in the 1960s. Born in 1932 and part of the musical generation that matured in the shadow of Charlie Parker, McLean served his apprenticeship at the very top, recording with the likes of Miles Davis, Charles Mingus and Art Blakey. ~ AllMusic

Guitarist Barney Kessel recorded regularly for the Contemporary label during 1953-1961, one gem after another. In 1969 he returned to Lester Koenig's label for this lone effort, a quartet set with vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, bassist Chuck Domanico, and drummer Elvin Jones. The music is fairly free, particularly Kessel's four originals (which include "Blues, Up, Down & All Around" and "Two Note Samba" ). ~ AllMusic
