In 1982, soul goddess Chaka Khan did the unexpected when she recorded this excellent, straight-ahead jazz LP. Regrettably, the album was released under the name Echoes of an Era instead of under Khan's own name – so it wasn't nearly the big seller it probably would have been if Elektra had fully exploited Khan's connection with the project. But while Echoes of an Era was the victim of questionable marketing, it was a creative triumph.

Fans of Sun Ra, take notice there is a new American original on the scene who hails from Birmingham, Alabama. Lonnie Holley s music is unlike anything we have ever heard, and we feel these recordings are a welcome addition to the continuum of music. This album marks the first time Dust-to-Digital has taken an artist into a recording studio. Lonnie Bradley Holley was born on February 10, 1950 in Birmingham, Alabama, the seventh of twenty-seven children. From the age of 5, Holley worked various jobs: picking up trash at a drive-in movie theatre, washing dishes, and cooking. He lived in a whiskey house, on the state fairgrounds, and in several foster homes.

"The Voice of Love" is easily Brown's finest work since his seminal "Fire" recording. It is the music he has always longed to make - melodic, spiritual and yearning, with a wellspring of passion and earthy power at its core. This music really displays Arthur's incredible voice and astonishing range to the full. With the release of this record, perhaps we may finally see Arthur Brown fulfill the immense potential that he has been displaying since that first explosion of bravado, sexuality and charisma that captivated London and the world fourty years ago. From "The God of Hellfire" to "The Voice of Love"- a long journey, but perhaps the best is still to come.

It's no secret that Sting is a serious man, so it's only logical that his holiday album – his first new music since the Police reunion, not that it really matters – is a serious endeavor, thank you. No niceties for him, no comforts of carols; he favors formal over familiar, writing madrigals, not ditties. It is music made by someone who lives in a castle, which isn't necessarily such a bad thing: the austerity is genuine, not affected, and the cerebral nature of the album is fascinating, albeit mildly so, as this is as sleepy as it is thoughtful. And it's that thoughtfulness that does distinguish If on a Winter's Night…; no other Christmas album exists in the head like this. It's a holiday album for people who have never wanted to hear a holiday album, let alone own one.

A&M Records' three-CD Styx box set Chronicles is nothing more or less than three of the band's albums – 1976's Crystal Ball, 1977's The Grand Illusion, and 1978's Pieces of Eight – packaged together. In fact, it looks as though all the label did was take the discs and their one-sheet CD booklets out of their jewel boxes and stick them in a ten-and-a-half by five-and-three-quarters-inch box. Thus, the collection consists of the 1987 CD reissue of Pieces of Eight, the 1988 CD reissue of Crystal Ball, and the 1990 CD reissue of The Grand Illusion. The sound quality tends to be somewhat boxy by later standards, particularly on Crystal Ball, and the information in the booklets is sparse, though The Grand Illusion does boast a lyric sheet.

In twenty years as leader, pianist/composer Bojan Z has been judicious with the frequency and quality of his releases. Soul Shelter is his ninth CD in that time, and his first solo outing since Solobsession (Label Bleu, 2001). A new release by the pianist is always an event, and the wait, as always, has been worth it. The music on Soul Shelter covers wide stylistic territory and marks another significant milestone in Z's captivating career to date.

Released in 1988, Guitar may be the most important and ironically one of the least-known entries in Frank Zappa's voluminous discography – which spans over seven-dozen LPs as of this writing. His proficiencies as a composer and instrumentalist have long been lauded. However, anthologies of this nature provide an outlet for the remarkable breadth and depth of Zappa's manual dexterity and improvisational scope, which can now be enjoyed on a myriad of levels. The casual enthusiast can revel in the seemingly endless personas and sounds summoned from the soloist and band alike.

None of Jethro Tull's progressive rock tendencies or classical influences followed Mick Abrahams into his creation of Blodwyn Pig, even with the inclusion Jack Lancaster's sax- and flute-playing prowess. Instead, Abrahams built up a sturdy British blues-rock sound and used Lancaster's horn work to add some fire to the band's jazzy repertoire. Ahead Rings Out is a stellar concoction of gritty yet flamboyant blues-rock tunes and open-ended jazz centered around Mick Abrahams' cool-handed guitar playing, but it's the nonstop infusion of the other styles that makes the album such a solid listen…

The Welsh composer Gareth Walters (1928–2012) studied with Jean Rivier and Olivier Messiaen in Paris in the early 1950s, inheriting a formal elegance which characterised his music ever after, enhanced on this disc by a nocturnal, serenade-like quality. The two song-cycles on this disc – Cân y galon (‘Song of the Heart’), set in Welsh, on aspects of love, and Poésies du soir, which evoke the calm of summer evenings – share the song-writing clarity of Britten, whose early encouragement ….

Matthias Bamert’s ‘Contemporaries of Mozart’ project is one of Chandos’ longest-running and most successful series. The unquestionable genius of Mozart has tended to eclipse the accomplishments of many other composers who were writing at the same time as he. Many of these composers, successful in their day, suffered neglect in subsequent decades and in some cases were almost forgotten. Matthias Bamert’s series has shown just how rich this area of the repertoire is, and each of the CDs has received superb critical acclaim.
