In 1982, soul goddess Chaka Khan did the unexpected when she recorded this excellent, straight-ahead jazz LP. Regrettably, the album was released under the name Echoes of an Era instead of under Khan's own name – so it wasn't nearly the big seller it probably would have been if Elektra had fully exploited Khan's connection with the project. But while Echoes of an Era was the victim of questionable marketing, it was a creative triumph.

"The Voice of Love" is easily Brown's finest work since his seminal "Fire" recording. It is the music he has always longed to make - melodic, spiritual and yearning, with a wellspring of passion and earthy power at its core. This music really displays Arthur's incredible voice and astonishing range to the full. With the release of this record, perhaps we may finally see Arthur Brown fulfill the immense potential that he has been displaying since that first explosion of bravado, sexuality and charisma that captivated London and the world fourty years ago. From "The God of Hellfire" to "The Voice of Love"- a long journey, but perhaps the best is still to come.

None of Jethro Tull's progressive rock tendencies or classical influences followed Mick Abrahams into his creation of Blodwyn Pig, even with the inclusion Jack Lancaster's sax- and flute-playing prowess. Instead, Abrahams built up a sturdy British blues-rock sound and used Lancaster's horn work to add some fire to the band's jazzy repertoire. Ahead Rings Out is a stellar concoction of gritty yet flamboyant blues-rock tunes and open-ended jazz centered around Mick Abrahams' cool-handed guitar playing, but it's the nonstop infusion of the other styles that makes the album such a solid listen…

The Welsh composer Gareth Walters (1928–2012) studied with Jean Rivier and Olivier Messiaen in Paris in the early 1950s, inheriting a formal elegance which characterised his music ever after, enhanced on this disc by a nocturnal, serenade-like quality.
